Bollywood and Punjabi star Gurpreet Ghuggi inaugurates Smarters Music Studio in Mohali, ushering in global-standard music and post-production facilities for North India

The grand opening was marked by the presence of renowned Bollywood and Punjabi actor and comedian Gurpreet Ghuggi as the chief guest, along with a host of prominent artists, directors, producers and industry professionals from the music, film and OTT sectors. Hosted in association with Delhi Tourism and the Archaeological Survey of India, and co-presented by Max Estates, the evening was conceived as an intimate encounter between music, architecture and atmosphere, allowing the monument’s presence to shape the evening.
 

Curated by Simar Malhotra, founder at Inkpot India and an alumna of Stanford University and Columbia University, the evening featured a sitar performance by Mehtab Ali Niazi and his ensemble, whose repertoire was developed in response to the scale and acoustic character of the Qutub Minar. The performance drew from classical foundations while responding to the monument’s acoustics and setting. The evening opened with an address by Eric Chopra, author and founder of Itihasology who spoke on India’s living heritage, reflecting on the cultural continuum of the Qutub Minar and the Mehrauli region before the central musical performance commenced.
 

The musical experience was designed to engage all five senses through a considered integration of sound, sight, scent, taste and touch, creating an immersive cultural environment. The format emphasised attentiveness and presence, with the monument remaining central to the experience.

A composer, lyricist, singer, and guitarist, Milin has carved a distinctive space in the Indie landscape, specializing in Rock, Pop-Rock, and Psychedelic Rock. His musical journey began in Nagpur, sparked by casual explorations in light Indian music during his school years, supported by private lessons.

He later formed a college band at Sydenham College, Mumbai, performing as a singer-guitarist, before pursuing formal training at the prestigious GIT, Musicians’ Institute, Hollywood, California. Milin has also studied piano privately in Mumbai and received Hindustani Classical vocal training under Pandit Yeshwant Mahale and Raghunandan Panshikar.

His mentors/instructors at Musicians’ Institute included renowned guitar virtuosos Kimbo Smith, Dan Gilbert, Scott Henderson, Ron Eschete, and Joe Diorio.

With Sandip Soparrkar serving as sutradhar for the evening, and emcee Ratan Pratap introducing each act with warmth and grace, the event transcended traditional performance formats to place disabled artists at the very heart of India’s dance narrative.The showcase brought together dancers representing India’s full 17 recognised disability categories—including blindness, low vision, leprosy-cured status, hearing impairment, locomotor disability, dwarfism, intellectual disability, mental illness, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, chronic neurological conditions, specific learning disabilities, speech and language disabilities, multiple disabilities, acid attack survivors, and Parkinson’s disease. Each performer brought a unique story to the stage, demonstrating that dance is not about symmetry or speed—but about presence, spirit, and truth.

Indrani Mukerjea, Founder of IME, addressed the audience, sharing, “True resilience is not about returning to where you were, but about moving forward differently—with wisdom, grace, and courage. Following tradition, the evening began with a Saraswati Vandana—an invocation to the goddess of wisdom, learning, and the arts—setting a tone of reverence and inspiration before Soparrkar guided the audience through the tapestry of performances.

Dance Without Barriers - The program included vibrant classical routines in Indian Sign Language, breathtaking wheelchair performances, expressive group pieces by dancers with Down syndrome, and soulful solos by survivors of acid attacks and performers managing chronic neurological conditions. 
 

Every participant contributed not just their art but their humanity—shifting the spotlight from disability to ability. Reflecting on their performances, several artists shared moving thoughts, “Parkinson’s may try to control my hands, but today, my spirit choreographed its own rhythm,” said Shail Pandey, a dancer managing Parkinson’s disease. “On this stage, for the first time, my movements told my story—not my condition.” 
 

“Today, it didn’t feel like my wheelchair is a limitation—more like a partner in my performance,” said Surbhi Bansal, a dancer with cerebral palsy. “People often ask me how I dance without limbs. But dance begins long before the body moves. It begins with the will to express—and tonight, that was more than enough,” said Sumeet Jadhav, another performer at today’s event. In a particularly moving gesture, every individual—from performers to choreographers to the emcee and support staff—contributed their time and talent free of charge, standing together in solidarity with the cause.The post-performance press interaction emphasised action over applause, with IME and Soparrkar urging greater accessibility in arts education, more inclusive public venues, and continuous platforms for artists with disabilities.

The session, chaired by legendary lyricist, poet, author and IPRS Chairman Mr. Javed Akhtar, served as a strategic platform for dialogue on the global and national relevance of IP rights. It underscored the need for stronger IP ecosystems that not only protect rights but also foster a sustainable creative economy.

World Premiere of 'Rise: Symphony No. 1 in D Minor' - Composed by Ganesh B. Kumar

The Origins of "RISE"
RISE - Symphony No.1 in D minor, was composed in 2018 and recorded on 2nd & 3rd of July 2019 in Halle, Germany, as part of his album “Spirit of Humanity” with the Staatskapelle Halle Orchestra, under the baton of Bernd Ruf. The album was released globally in 2020 by Navona Records, the classical imprint of PARMA Recordings (USA). The timing of its release was particularly significant, as 2020 marked the 250th birth anniversary of the legendary composer Ludwig van Beethoven - the very soul to whom this symphony pays homage. Following the classical three-movement Symphonic structure (Fast – Slow – Fast), each movement reflects a phase in Beethoven’s artistic and personal journey:

Krishnaswami Iyer (founder of Indian Bank and the Madras Sanskrit College), was among the first to bring the immortal verses of poet Subramania Bharati to the world, ensuring they reached the hands of young aspiring students across different schools. About The Composer
Ganesh B. Kumar, L.T.C.L., is a music composer and producer based in Chennai, India. He holds a Double Licentiate (Practical & Theory) from the Trinity College of Music, London. In his early years, he collaborated with numerous renowned figures, notably working with the legendary filmmaker Padmashri K. Balachander, a recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest honour in cinema.

Kumar made his Hollywood debut with the score for the film 9 Lives of Mara. His contribution earned him recognition as a credited Hollywood composer, and the score went on to win the Best Music Soundtrack Award (2008) at the Tabloid Witch Awards Festival in Santa Monica, California.

Kumar's exceptional contributions to music were further acknowledged in 2010 when, Trinity College of Music, London, honored him with a special felicitation for his outstanding achievements in both classical and contemporary music.

One of Kumar's most remarkable accomplishments occurred in 2015 when he composed the first large-scale choral a cappella work in Tamil, featuring the spiritual masterpiece "Shanmuga Kavacham," written by Srimath Pamban Swamigal in 1891. This work had its world premiere by the Chamber Choir of Europe in Wiesbaden, Germany, in a concert titled "Mantra meets Classic," conducted by the esteemed Nicol Matt. Following the premiere, a recording of "Shanmuga Kavacham," along with other mantras presented during the concert, was produced. The album was subsequently released by Hänssler Classic GmbH.

The 2020 album Spirit of Humanity, which also features the Symphony RISE, marked a historic milestone as Kumar became, the first Indian composer to create a Symphonic Poem—THE JOURNEY—honouring the life of Maharaj Jam Saheb Digvijay Singh (fondly named Indian Oskar Schindler). This work highlights Kumar’s exceptional ability to convey profound narratives through the language of music.

This ancient form of Traditional Indian Music is an important part of our rich Cultural Heritage. Originally known as ‘Pushtimargi Sangeet’ and is typically performed in temples of Lord Krishna (havelis). It is a description of Lord Krishna’s daily life activities, that has been written by ‘Ashtachap Kavis’ (8 Saints). This genre has significantly enriched the repertoire of our vast Indian Music. In 2023, IPRS’s total collections surpassed INR 500 Crores, with digital revenues accounting for 74.2% of this figure. This impressive digital growth, 493.6% over the last five years, reflects India’s evolving digital consumption habits. India is one of the largest consumers of music globally, with millions accessing music daily through multiple digital and streaming platforms. Despite this, the number of paid subscribers in India remains disproportionately low compared to other major markets. The reliance on free, ad-supported tiers significantly limits the revenue generated from streaming, creating a value gap for artists and rights holders.

Another critical concern highlighted in the CISAC report is the issue of fair value and low compliance with copyright and licensing laws in India. Many broadcasters, venues, events and digital platforms fail to adhere to licensing requirements, leading to delayed payments to rights holders and missed opportunities for revenue growth.

The low compliance rate is a major concern for rights management organizations like IPRS, which have been working to improve transparency and strengthen the enforcement of copyright laws. Ensuring that music creators receive fair compensation for the use of their work remains a top priority, but it will require more collaborative efforts between industry players and policymakers to bridge the gaps in the current system.

While digital streaming dominates India's music revenues, the live music industry too holds significant untapped potential. Live and public performances, including concerts and festivals, rebounded strongly in 2023, contributing to a 22% increase in global collections. India, with its rich cultural diversity and growing appetite for live entertainment, is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend.

However, the live music sector in India remains fragmented, with a vast number of organizers and venues across the country needing greater awareness and adoption of music licensing norms and best practices. Enhancing this understanding is essential to ensure that revenue flows equitably to the creators who form the foundation of the music ecosystem. While there is a broad exception in law for marriage-related events, where music usage does not require licensing, it is important to note that other live music performances still require proper licensing to ensure fair compensation for creators. IPRS is actively addressing this gap by promoting industry-wide compliance through its robust licensing network, aiming to diversify revenue streams beyond digital collections and support the thriving live music sector.

CISAC Director General Gadi ORON commented, “This Report gives a unique overview of the economic and cultural value of our global CISAC community. This year’s figures, for royalties’ collections by CISAC members in 2023, paint a positive picture of a healthy, stable and promising sector. Overall, collections on behalf of creators reached a new all-time high of EUR13.1bn, an impressive 7.6% increase. During the last five years, CISAC members have added over EUR3bn to the amounts they collect for authors and copyright holders. This, in itself, is a major achievement and shows the strength of the collective management system.”

Mr. Rakesh Nigam, the CEO of the Indian Performing Right Society Limited (IPRS), added, “We are proud of the progress IPRS has made, but we recognize that significant challenges remain. The low compliance rate in India is a serious concern, as it directly affects the earnings of our creators. Celebrating the International Mother’s Day with Self Care Theme Song

The initiative engages young mothers in rural communities through innovative outreach programs, including traditional street plays, a variety of educational activities, and door-to-door engagements that bring vital health information and services right to their doorsteps. This direct approach ensures that the benefits of self-care and health education reach every household, aligning with Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to 'Health For All.' The program’s extensive reach in these regions helps to empower mothers and caregivers, enabling them to take charge of their own and their children’s health effectively.

Initially known as ‘Reach Each Child,’ the program reached over 268 villages across five districts - Nandurbar and Amravati in Maharashtra, Rajsamand in Rajasthan, and Gir and Bhavnagar in Gujarat. Since its inception last year, the program has reached over 70,000 children under the age of five and the initiative has reached over 4 million mothers through the region. Now, transitioning to Self-Care, the program aims to extend its reach to 10 million mothers. ‘

Empowering Local Communities: With 'Gulabi Didis 

The 'Self Care for New Moms and Kids Under 5' initiative leverages the expertise of 'Gulabi didis,' local women trained as community health workers who are pivotal in disseminating health knowledge and enhancing healthcare access. They bring the program directly to households focusing on taking comprehensive self-care education to every young mother and child across the region and leaving no one behind.

'Gulabi didis’ play a critical role in educating young women and caregivers through one-on-one counselling around the six fundamental self-care pillars for maternal health including Hygiene and Health, Antenatal Checkups, Birth Spacing, Yoga and Mental Well-being, Food and Health, and Vector-borne Diseases. They ensure that they key principles for Self care reach and are adopted as outlined by the WHO Self Care guidelines. Providing counselling across various topics such as maintaining a healthy diet, being physically active, getting vaccinated, avoiding tobacco, managing stress for physical and mental health, practising good health, regularly checking health, breastfeeding, and birth spacing. 

Additionally, the Community Health Workers sensitise communities on the importance of proper handwashing at the critical touch points which includes washing hands after defecation, and the use of toilets; before eating; before preparing and serving food; before feeding infants/children; after cleaning a child’s bottom, and after coughing/sneezing during illness. In addition, the program has established partnerships with health and Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) departments to conduct community mothers’ meetings through Village Health Sanitation and Nutrition Days (VHSNDs), also known as 'Mamta Diwas'.

The program also follows WHO’s guidelines to prevent major childhood diseases like Diarrhoea and Pneumonia, utilising the 7-point plan for Comprehensive Diarrhoea Control and the Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pneumonia and Diarrhoea (GAPPD). In addition, through the counselling provided by 'Gulabi didis' help in the identification, and referral of diarrhoea and pneumonia cases which are one of the most common causes leading to infant deaths in the region and help enable a prioritized and prompt management of these conditions throughout the region.
