Shri Sanjay Khanna, Chairman & Managing Director, BPCL
 

The appointment has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet based on the recommendation of the Search-cum-Selection Committee (SCSC), under the aegis of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Shri Khanna will assume charge, effective from the date of assumption of office, and will hold the position till his superannuation on May 31, 2029, or until further orders.

With extensive experience in refinery operations and project execution, Shri Khanna is expected to further strengthen BPCL’s strategic focus on value-added products, petrochemical integration, operational efficiency, and long-term energy security, while driving sustainable growth in an evolving energy landscape.

Shri Sanjay Khanna is a seasoned industry leader with over three decades of experience in refinery operations and technical services. A Chemical Engineering graduate from National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli and a postgraduate in Finance Management from University of Mumbai, Shri Khanna has played a pivotal role in strengthening BPCL’s refining and petrochemical capabilities.

Prior to his appointment as C&MD, he served as Director (Refineries) and has previously headed BPCL’s Mumbai and Kochi Refineries, driving operational excellence and capacity augmentation. As Executive Director of Kochi Refinery, he successfully led the commissioning of BPCL’s first niche petrochemical venture—the Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Project (PDPP)—despite significant challenges during the pandemic, marking a key milestone in BPCL’s petrochemical journey.

Over the years, Shri Khanna has anchored several prestigious projects involving the establishment of new process units across BPCL’s refineries, contributing to enhanced efficiency, higher value realization, and technological advancement.

He also serves on the Boards of Bharat Petro Resources Limited, Petronet LNG Limited, and Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited, strengthening BPCL’s integration across the energy value chain. Additionally, Shri Khanna is the Chairperson of the Technical Committee for Petroleum Refineries under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, contributing to policy and technical advancements in India’s refining sector.

To help industry manage the present global volatility, the associations have suggested targeted policy support measures, including a special working capital credit line, temporary relaxation in MSME payment norms, enhancement of working capital borrowing limits and waiver of safeguard duties on critical raw materials.

However, the associations expressed serious concern over the unprecedented rise in raw material prices over the past six months, which is placing severe stress on the MSME-driven pump manufacturing sector.

Over the past year, copper prices have increased by more than 50%, rising from about ₹800–850 per kg to ₹1,200 per kg. Copper alone accounts for 25–30% of the material cost in several categories of pumps. At the same time, sharp increases in aluminium, steel, cast iron, polymers, cables and other key inputs have resulted in overall manufacturing cost escalation exceeding 20%, significantly eroding industry margins.

Industry leaders cautioned that continued absorption of raw material inflation could push many pump manufacturers — particularly MSMEs — into an existential crisis. To partly absorb these abnormal cost increases, manufacturers have already initiated a phased price revision of around 10% with reference to October 2025 price levels, to be implemented before 31 March 2026. Given the continuing volatility in metal prices and supply uncertainties, the situation now warrants a further minimum price increase of 7.5 -10% effective from April 2026.

The associations also reiterated that water pumps are primary agricultural machinery, essential for irrigation, groundwater management and rural livelihoods. In view of this, the industry has urged the Government to reduce GST on water pumps from 18% to 5%, to support farmers, sustain organised manufacturing and promote energy-efficient technologies.

PNG Drive 2.0 reflects the collective commitment of the City Gas Distribution (CGD) industry, under the guidance of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), to expand the reach of clean, reliable, and affordable natural gas across the country, with a common outreach framework aimed at expanding consumer awareness and accelerating last-mile adoption of natural gas.

As part of this campaign, THINK Gas also announced its commitment to connect 30000+ households with PNG connections and enhance the CNG station network across 10 states. During the inaugural event, THINK Gas commenced the operations of PNG Connection to 500 households in Ashiana Dwarka - Premium Homes and flagged off a CNG rally to signify the strengthening of CNG adoption in the region.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Anil Kumar Jain, Chairperson, Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), said, “National Drive 2.0 is a focused initiative of PNGRB to deepen the reach of City Gas Distribution networks and accelerate the adoption of PNG and CNG across the country. The Unified Tariff framework is enhancing affordability, transparency, and access, ensuring that regulatory reforms translate into direct consumer benefits. With nearly 60% of Jodhpur city covered, over 51,000 households connected, and domestic PNG prices reduced by Rs. 2.77 per SCM from January 1, 2026, the impact at the household level is clearly visible. Such LNG-based CGD models are replicable for expanding clean, reliable, and economical energy to far-flung areas. I am confident that National Drive 2.0 will significantly accelerate PNG and CNG adoption nationwide and strengthen India’s clean energy ecosystem.”
 

Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Amitava Sengupta, Chairman, THINK Gas, said, “PNGRB’s National Drive 2.0 is a landmark initiative that will play a pivotal role in accelerating the adoption of PNG and CNG across India. This drive comes close on the heels of the implementation of landmark tariff reforms by the PNGRB when Domestic PNG and CNG segments will benefit from a preferential tariff system. We thank Dr. Anil Kumar Jain, Chairperson, PNGRB, and the Board for their leadership in creating a progressive regulatory framework, that enables wider access to clean and affordable natural gas. THINK Gas has exemplified this vision by investing over Rs. 510 crore in the Barmer-Jodhpur-Jaisalmer Geographical Area and adopting a unique LCNG-based hybrid supply model to ensure uninterrupted gas supply even in the absence of pipeline connectivity. Building on the strong response to last year’s National Drive, which witnessed significant on-ground enrolments and increased CNG adoption, we will further intensify customer outreach across our Geographical Areas to support India’s transition towards a gas-based economy.”
 

As part of THINK Gas’s active participation in National Drive 2.0, the campaign will be rolled out from January to March 2026 across the 10 states where THINK Gas has presence - Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.
 

Aligning with PNGRB’s Unified Tariff revision, THINK Gas has also announced significant reduction in prices across its operating Geographical Areas which will benefit the end consumer. Under the revised framework, domestic PNG prices have been reduced by up to Rs. 5/SCM (standard cubic meter), while CNG prices have been reduced up to Rs. 2.50/KG in select Geographical Areas. Additionally, THINK Gas has reduced Domestic PNG prices by up to Rs. 4/SCM in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, and by up to Rs. 2.77/SCM in Rajasthan, even though these states are not yet connected to the National Gas Grid and are not benefiting from the tariff reforms at present.
 

The multitude of customer centric reforms and initiatives of the PNGRB are expected to result in a significant increase in the adoption of DPNG and CNG in the country.

BPCL Inaugurates Vigilance Awareness Week 2025
 

The ceremony commenced with the Integrity Pledge, administered by Shri Rajkumar Dubey, Director (HR), reaffirming BPCL’s collective commitment to ethical conduct and transparency.
 

In her inaugural address, Smt. Meenaxi Rawat, CVO BPCL, emphasized the importance of integrity and vigilance in building a strong institutional framework. Citing India’s current ranking in the Corruption Perception Index, she called for continuous improvement and greater accountability. Highlighting BPCL’s robust complaint handling mechanisms, she noted that “Excellence and governance should go hand in hand.” She also spoke about BPCL Vigilance’s proactive initiatives such as frequent awareness workshops, the Integrity Club program for school children, and the release of the Vigilance Case Study Compendium 2025, aimed at sensitizing and engaging the younger generation of employees.

Raising the Bar with ‘Zero Ka Dum’
BPCL’s LPG operations team has taken a transformative step toward ensuring uncompromised quality and customer safety through the Zero Ka Dum (ZKD) certification program.

Under this initiative, each LPG bottling plant undergoes a rigorous third-party certification audit conducted by independent agencies accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB). These audits assess every stage of the cylinder’s journey — from plant to consumer — ensuring that only defect-free, high-quality cylinders reach customers.

Shri Sanjay Khanna, Director (Refineries) with Additional Charge of Chairman & Managing Director, said, “The ‘Zero Ka Dum’ initiative reflects BPCL’s unwavering commitment to operational excellence and customer safety. So far, 50 LPG plants have successfully achieved ZKD certification, with the remaining plants progressing steadily toward completion. This milestone reaffirms BPCL’s leadership in operational excellence and its deep-rooted commitment to customer safety.

Team Kochi Refinery

To mark the occasion, Shri Suresh Gopi, Hon’ble Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Tourism, lit the ceremonial lamp and planted a tree sapling. He lauded Kochi Refinery for its energizing presence in Kerala and recalled the pivotal role it has played in the State’s economy.

Taking the stage at the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Shri Sanjay Khanna, Director (Refineries) with additional charge of Chairman & Managing Director, BPCL highlighted, “BPCL’s strong Q1 performance and Kochi Refinery’s proactive efforts in reducing the Energy Intensity Index (EII) and cutting raw water consumption by 20–25%. He noted that the refinery achieved this through multiple initiatives, including the maximization of water recycling from Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) via the RODM plant, cooling tower make-up optimization, and other water conservation measures. Several technological advancements have also been identified for further reductions in water consumption.”

Born as Cochin Refineries Limited in collaboration with Phillips Petroleum, USA, the Kochi Refinery began operations in 1966 with a capacity of 50,000 barrels per day. It was later renamed Kochi Refineries Limited and, today, operates as one of BPCL’s three major refineries with a current crude oil refining capacity of 15.5 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA).

The refinery’s product portfolio includes Liquefied Petroleum Gas, Naphtha, Motor Spirit, Kerosene, Aviation Turbine Fuel, High-Speed Diesel, and Asphalt. Specialty products for domestic markets include Benzene, Toluene, Food Grade Hexane, Propylene, Special Boiling Point Spirit, Mineral Turpentine Oil, Sulphur, Petcoke, and Hydrogen.

In the petrochemicals sector, the Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Project was dedicated to the nation by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on February 14, 2021. BPCL is also investing Rs. 5,044 crore in a new Polypropylene (PP) Unit at Kochi Refinery, with a production capacity of 400 kilo-tonnes per annum (KTPA). This project will utilize the refinery’s propylene feedstock to meet the growing domestic demand for polypropylene, a versatile material used in packaging films, containers, and homeware.

BetaTANK Robot and the thick sludge pumped out by the robot

The current generation of tank cleaning robots worldwide, employ suction method to remove sludge, and do not have a pump on the robot. These have not been very successful, since suction is limited by nature to only one bar pressure. BetaTANK robot has a pump on the robot and uses the pump discharge pressure of 10 bar. Subsequent to the signing of the term sheet on 23rd February 2025, during Elecrama 2025, NTPC and EDF India propose to form a JVC with 50:50 Partnership after requisite approval from the Government of India.

Distinguished guests at the RD20 Conference

The session commenced with a Welcome Address by Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General, TERI, and an Opening Address by RD20 Chair, Mr Kazuhiko Ishimura (AIST), who remarked, “Research is becoming serious year on year. Because of this there is a great expectation of carbon neutrality to be accelerated. We expect leaders to have deep dive sessions advancing the discussions towards achieving carbon neutrality.” Representatives from the Indian government, MNRE and the Japanese government (METI, MOE, MEXT) also extended their welcome messages. The plenary presentation was delivered by Mr Takashi Naruse from NEDO.

Shri Sudeep Jain, Additional Secretary, Minister of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) in his opening remarks thanked Japan for giving India the opportunity to host the RD20 conference. “The 6th RD20 conference in India highlights the importance of collaborative R&D in addressing global challenges. India has made significant progress in renewable energy, with a vision to reach 77% renewable energy by 2047. The country is also investing in R&D to support its growing manufacturing hub for renewable energy equipment.” Speaking on the Honourable Prime Minister of India's vision on sustainability, green energy and renewable energy, he added, “Our Prime Minister has a vision which goes beyond the current generation, to looking at several generations ahead.”

The Leaders Session featured key discussions on India’s energy transformation. The subsequent plenary lecture by Mr Abhay Bakre, Mission Director, MNRE, focused on the ‘Role of Clean Hydrogen in India’s Energy Transition: Opportunities and Challenges.’ Mr Bakre noted, “The sustainability goals for energy transition are to achieve the target of net zero by 2070, non-fossil electricity generation capacity to reach 500 GW by 2030 and emission intensity of GDP to reduce by 45%. The two basic pathways for energy transition are electricity and hard-to-electricity. Hydrogen comes up with the most promising pathway for decarbonising the hard-to-electricity sectors.”

Other highlights included updates on RD20 activities and technical sessions, with presentations by Dr William Tumas (NREL) and Dr Haruhiko Obara (AIST). The updates covered Action Committee progress, RD20 Summer Schools, and reports from the Tokyo symposium and COP29. Key outcomes from the 2024 RD20 Technical Sessions were presented by co-organisers Mr Pierre Sierre Combe, CEA and Mr Mark Ruth, NREL, (Technical session I); Dr Sanjukta Subudhi, TERI; Mr David Harris, CSIRO and Mr Randy Cortright, NREL (Technical session II); and Dr Myriam Merad, CNRD and Dr Alberta Carpenter, NERL (Technical session III), including advancements in sustainable biofuels, biochemicals, and hydrogen technologies, alongside updates on future workshops and technical barriers to hydrogen implementation.

A significant segment of the session was dedicated to discussing opportunities for collaboration between RD20 and Mission Innovation (Clean Energy Ministerial and G20), a global initiative aimed at accelerating clean energy innovation to achieve net-zero emissions.

Dr Michio Kondo (AIST) introduced opportunities for collaboration between RD20 and Mission Innovation that highlighted the perspectives put forth by the different participating countries and institutions. Dr Kondo emphasised, “RD20 has huge potential to support and collaborate with G20 Working Groups from technology point of views, techno economic aspects and lifecycle assessments in carbon neutral technologies." He also mentioned, “To enhance the cooperation amongst G20 members and to accelerate the implementation of common goals towards energy transitions, RD20 could contribute to the RIWG/G20 through South African member, CSIR, in the upcoming G20 in South Africa in 2025.”

Ms Helen Fairclough from Mission Innovation elaborated on the initiative's global significance, stating, “Mission Innovation is a global initiative catalysing a decade of action and investment in research, development, and demonstration to make clean energy affordable, attractive and accessible for all. This will accelerate progress towards the Paris Agreement goals and pathways to net zero.”

Sharing her perspective on Brazil, Ms Rachel Martins Henriques, Technical Consultant, Brazil, highlighted, “The intersection of the CEM and RD20 emphasizes the importance of sharing knowledge and best practices among nations to overcome common challenges in clean energy deployment.” Sharing her views on the Mission Innovation policies on bio-refineries in Brazil, she said, “The National Biofuel Policy (RenovaBio) aims to increase the addition of anhydrous ethanol to gasoline and biodiesel to diesel B, with certified production capacity of ethanol, biodiesel, and biogas by 15% March 2025. The ‘Fuels of the Future’ programme aims to reduce carbon intensity, evaluate energy-environmental efficiency, and stimulate innovation.”

The inaugural ceremony was led by Chief Guest Shri Dinesh Kumar Jain, Ex-Chief Secretary of Maharashtra and Ex-Member Lokpal, who joined BPCL leadership including Smt. Meenaxi Rawat administered the Integrity Pledge, uniting BPCL officials across India through a live webcast to affirm their dedication to honesty and transparency.
 

In a message to employees, Shri G. Krishnakumar, Chairman and Managing Director, BPCL highlighted Bharat Petroleum's commitment to ethics, integrity, and accountability, which are fundamental to its operations. He stated that this week serves as a vital reminder of our dedication to fostering a corruption-free workplace. He also lauded Smt Meenaxi Rawat and her vigilance team, for their ongoing dedication to promoting the values of ethics and integrity.
 

In her address, Smt. Meenaxi Rawat highlighted India’s ranking in the Corruption Perception Index, emphasizing the need for continuous improvement in ethical practices. She referred Ethisphere’s annual rankings, which reveal that ethical companies often outperform the market, a testament to BPCL’s core values of Ethics and Trust. BPCL’s commitment to transparency was evident in the recent integration of all policies and guidelines on a centralized intranet webpage, streamlining access across all business units. Citing the success of the Public Grievance Portal, Smt. Rawat emphasized the importance of a robust complaint-handling system, adding that vigilance is not only a function of vigilance officers but a shared responsibility across BPCL’s workforce.
 

Chief Guest Shri Dinesh Kumar Jain, in his keynote, elaborated on the foundational values of honesty and integrity. Sharing an anecdote from Sweden involving a Member of Parliament meticulously distinguishing between personal and official expenses, Shri Jain illustrated how simple acts of accountability reinforce integrity. He outlined the formula for understanding corruption as “Corruption equals Monopoly plus Discretion minus Accountability,” highlighting how the Government of India has tackled corruption with measures like Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and faceless Income Tax assessments. Commending BPCL’s Integrity Clubs in schools, he emphasized the value of instilling ethics in young minds.
 

To mark the occasion, three significant publications were launched: The Vigilance Officer’s Handbook, Do’s & Don’ts Handbook for Officers, and the Vigilance Newsletter, which are expected to enhance vigilance practices within BPCL.
 

Vigilance Awareness Week 2024 will continue with a series of events and initiatives, aimed at promoting a strong culture of integrity and vigilance across BPCL’s operations, fostering a resilient, transparent corporate ethos for sustainable growth.
 

Newly appointed leadership team along with MD, Mr. Shekhar Singal of Eastman Auto & Power Ltd.

The company had posted a turnover exceeding Rs. 3,600 crores in FY 2023-24 representing a 40% growth in revenues over the previous financial year. Committed to sustainable and profitable growth, the company plans on achieving Rs 10,000 crores by FY 25-26 sharply focusing efforts and investments in building its Solar Rooftop Solutions business alongside its mainstay Last Mile E-Mobility Solutions business. This goal shall be driven by strategic investments in new power electronics manufacturing facilities for solar inverters (for grid-connected and off-grid solutions), technology partnerships and participation in multiple advanced chemistries for energy storage. 

With an eye on the future, Eastman has brought in seasoned industry stalwarts to take on crucial roles within the organization.

Here is a breakdown of the key changes:

• Ashok Jain has been appointed as Chief Finance Officer (CFO). Mr. Jain shall lead finance, accounts, banking, treasury, commercial operations, and taxation, driving strong financial management necessary for EAPL’s continued growth.

• Mantosh Kumar has taken on the role as Vice President of Finance Planning & Analysis. He will be instrumental in shaping the financial strategy of Eastman, with a focus on driving profitability, managing investor relations, and evaluating new business segments.

• Daulat Sati with his extensive industry knowledge shall be instrumental in improving service quality and boosting customer satisfaction as the Service Head at Eastman. 

• Nirvikar Sharma has been brought on board as the Sales Head – INDIA 1 for the Continued Energy Solutions business at EAPL. With his extensive sales leadership experience Mr. Sharma will be responsible for driving market growth in the region.

• Sunil Sood joins as the Sales Head – INDIA 2 for the Continued Energy Solutions business at EAPL. Mr. Sood, with his expertise in Network and Distribution, shall lead the expansion of EAPL business for the region.

• Ritesh Srivastava shall be Vice President of Supply Chain Management. Mr. Shrivastava, with his vast experience across industries, shall oversee Eastman’s Supply Chain Operations and Warehouse Management.

• Bhupinder Singh will serve as Vice President of Exports. His expertise in international business, sales, and market building shall be essential in further expanding Eastman’s global presence.

• Sudham Ravinutala takes on the position of Chief Marketing Officer. His strategic acumen and deep understanding of products and consumer will be instrumental in advancing the brand and help Eastman reach new audiences.

The event, inaugurated by Shri Pralhad Joshi, Hon'ble Union Minister, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy & Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, witnessed high-level discussions on the integration of renewable energy into the grid, digital transformation in the energy sector, emission control, and the role of advanced technologies in ensuring energy security.

Reflecting on the successful conclusion of the event, Shri P. K. Pujari, IAS (Retd.), Honorary Chairperson of the Governing Council for POWERGEN India, and Indian Utility Week, stated, “We had this event for three days and the participation has been very impressive. The issues that were discussed are key to India’s energy transition. The idea was to get all the stakeholders in the power sector together and find convergence in challenges and issues.” He further added, “This summit has succeeded in doing that. Number of issues and areas where further work is required have come up. Hon'ble Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi in the inaugural session has suggested that these issues may be collated and put in a framework so that the stakeholders can work on it. The event commenced with a powerful exploration of opportunities in India's energy transition, highlighting India's role as a global leader in renewable energy with its impressive rank of 4th in installed renewable capacity. Shri Anil Sardana, Managing Director of Adani Energy Solutions, outlined Gujarat’s current power landscape, with 50% of its 53 GW installed capacity coming from renewables, and plans to scale up to 100 GW by 2030. He also emphasized GUNL’s recent agreements for 13 GW of new renewable energy capacity, positioning Gujarat as a leader in wind and solar energy. Shri Sardana noted that Gujarat's initiatives will play a crucial role in helping India meet its 500 GW renewable energy target by 2030. Shri Vivek Kumar Dewangan, MD, REC Limited; Shri S R Narasimhan, CMD, GRID India; Mr. Kazunari Fukui, Asia Decarbonisation Leader, GE Vernova; Shri R P Gupta, CMD, SECI; Dr. Alexandria Huerta, Deputy Mission Director, USAID, New Delhi, were also amongst the few prominent personalities who were a notable voice during the sessions.

Day two saw a series of impactful sessions which delved into India’s power generation. Shri Sanil C Namboodiripad of ONGC Tripura Power Co. Ltd emphasized the role of gas turbines in supporting grid stability and meeting the 500 GW fossil fuel-free target by 2030. The discussions also covered the challenges of scaling renewable energy, with Shri Deepesh Nanda, President - Renewables, Tata Power and MD & CEO, Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd highlighting connectivity issues and the importance of battery storage. One such session, moderated by Shri. Anurag Johri, MD & Lead Utilities, Accenture India, discussed around the strategies to navigate India’s energy utility landscape and transformation roadmap. Also, Shri R. Sarangapani, Executive Director, (BD, IBD & Consultancy Wing), NTPC Ltd., discussed the integration of AI and ML to enhance plant efficiency. The event also witnessed the presence and participation in sessions from Shri. As the event approached its final day, discussions focused on “Balancing the Future Energy Mix.” The Leadership Panel 3, featured insights from dignitaries such as Shri. Rohit Bajaj, Joint MD, Indian Energy Exchange; Shri Tarun Katiyar, CEO, Tata Power Trading, who shared thoughts around the evolving trends required for navigating the dynamics of tomorrow’s electricity markets. Key targets were also discussed, including India’s goal to become energy independent by 2047 and achieving the 500 GW renewable energy target by 2030, which requires adding 50 GW of renewable capacity each year. It also had a mention of the Prime Minister’s SURYAGHAR YOJNA, under which, India aims to install rooftop solar panels in 1 crore households. Additionally, it was highlighted that 120 GW of solar capacity is needed to power the agricultural sector, amid an 8% surge in national energy demand. Panelists also emphasized the importance of land availability and transmission infrastructure in achieving these goals.

The final session reviewed two panels, “Emission Control Norms and the Roadmap to Compliance and Women Leaders on the Future of Power.” Keynotes in the first included Shri Pankaj Kumar Gupta, General Manager, NTPC Ltd;  Mr. Mads Kirk Larsen, Global Manager, FLSmidth, and Shri Abhishek Ranjan, Partner, EY Parthenon among others, who discussed the regulatory framework and strategies for achieving India’s ambitious emissions targets. The women leadership panel brought forward the perspectives of Ms. Karuna Gopal, Independent Director, Engineers India Ltd. Under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, GOI and Ms. Abhilasha Gaur, CEO, Electronics Sector Skills Council of India.

Adding to the momentum of sustainability, a significant milestone was achieved when San International, a leading garment exporter, signed an MOU with CBR Energy, one of the exhibitors at POWERGEN India 2024. This partnership aims to turn San International’s manufacturing facility 100% green, further underlining the event’s commitment to advancing clean energy transition.

BPCL's reforestation project will utilize 200,000 seedballs distributed by drones, targeting remote and inaccessible areas. This innovative approach addresses the critical issues of rapid deforestation and land degradation, which have significantly impacted the region's biodiversity, climate resilience, and community well-being.

"At BPCL, we believe in the power of innovation and community. Our drone-based reforestation project in Nashik is a transformative step towards restoring nature and empowering local communities. By leveraging advanced technology and involving local residents, we aim to create a sustainable environment that benefits both the ecosystem and the people. The project encompasses comprehensive planning, including site selection using GIS mapping, community engagement, seedball production, and drone deployment. The target areas cover 100 hectares across three forest ranges in Nashik District: Sinnar Nashik Range, Hivre Village, and Ganga Mahalungi Village.

The main objectives are to restore the environment by planting 200,000 seedballs to rejuvenate deforested land, enhance local biodiversity, and promote ecosystem health. Tree species to be planted include Millettia Pinnata (Karanja), Azadirachta indica (Neem), Tectona grandis (Sagwan), Dalbergia Sissoo (Indian Rosewood), Acacia Catechu (Khair), Syzygium Cumini (Black Plum), and Mangifera Indica (Mango). Additionally, the project aims to involve local communities in seedball production and land management, fostering environmental awareness, and creating economic opportunities. It will also utilize seedcopter drones for efficient seedball deployment and employ advanced monitoring systems to track reforestation progress.

This initiative not only aims to restore the environment but also to empower local communities by providing training and employment opportunities in sustainable practices. By integrating scientific research, technological innovation, and community participation, BPCL aims to create a scalable and replicable reforestation model that can be implemented in other regions facing similar challenges. This pioneering reforestation initiative marks a significant step towards creating a greener and more sustainable environment in Nashik, enhancing both the ecosystem and the livelihoods of its residents.

Bharat Petroleum, one of the premier integrated energy companies in India, has posted the highest ever standalone net profit of Rs. 26,673.50 Crores as compared to the profit of Rs. 1,870.10 Crores in FY 22-23.

Major highlights of the financial results are given below:

• Company’s Gross Refining Margins (GRM) for the period FY 2023-24 was $14.14/bbl vs. $20.24/bbl in the corresponding comparative period.

• Net profit for the FY 2023-24 stood at Rs. 26,673.50 Crores.

• EBITDA for FY 23-24 is Rs. 44,771.49 Crores vs. Rs. 11,780.66 Crores in FY 22-23; EBITDA margin was at 8.83% in FY 23-24 vs. 2.21% in FY 22-23.

• EBITDA for Q4 FY 23-24 is Rs. 7,884.14 Crores vs. Rs.10,526.73 Crores in Q4 FY 22-23; EBITDA margin was at 5.97% in Q4 FY 23-24 vs. 7.89% in Q4 FY 22-23.

• Debt-Equity ratio as on March 31, 2024 was at 0.25x (as against 0.69x as on 31^st March 2023).

• Company’s net-worth increased to Rs. 74,674.80 Crores as on 31^st March 2024 from 51,996.34 Crores as on 31^st March 2023.

• Board has recommended final dividend of ­Rs. 21 per equity share (pre-bonus) for the year 2023-24, which translates into final dividend of Rs. 10.5 per share (post-bonus). The said dividend payment is subject to approval of the shareholders at the Annual General Meeting. This is in addition to the interim dividend of Rs. 21 (pre-bonus) per equity share already paid during the year.

• The Board of Directors has recommended issue of bonus shares in the ratio of one equity share of Rs. 10 each for every one existing equity share of Rs. 10 each, which is subject to approval by the shareholders of the company.

Physical Performance

• In the current year, the throughput was 39.93 MMT vs. 38.53 MMT in FY 22-23. Market Sales was 51.04 MMT in FY 23-24 vs. 48.92 MMT in FY 22-23. Sales has grown by 4.33%.

• During Q4 FY 2023-24, the throughput was 10.36 MMT vs. 10.63 MMT in the comparative period. The market sales for the period Q4 FY 2023-24 has increased to 13.18 MMT from 12.91 MMT in the comparative period (Growth of 2.09%).

• We have achieved Average Ethanol Blending percentage of 11.69% during 2023-24 with highest blending in Q4 FY 2023-24 of 12.15%.

• BPCL added 308 New Fuel Stations in Q4 FY 2023-24 (809 in Apr 23 to Mar 24), taking their network strength to 21,840.

• 323 CNG Stations commissioned in Q4 FY 2023-24 (435 in Apr 23 to Mar 24) taking the total CNG stations as on 31^st Mar 2024 to 2031.

We've achieved record-breaking operational and financial performance across refining throughput, domestic market sales, and profitability. Our Profit After Tax soared to a historic Rs. 26,673.50 Crores. These achievements provide a strong foundation for BPCL's ambitious strategy ‘Project Aspire’, which, at a planned capital outlay of Rs. 1.7 lakh Crores over a period of 5 years, will fuel our next wave of growth to create long term value for our shareholders. India's booming economy is our tailwind. We're confident it will drive a surge in energy demand, further fueling growth in our core and new businesses. We are planning to expand our refining capacity to 45 MMTPA and add 4,000 new fuel stations by FY2029. We are investing in future big bets including the setting up of petchem facilities in Bina and Kochi, tripling our gas footprint by FY2029, and seizing economic opportunities in the Green Businesses.”

On the outlook for FY 2024-25, he added, “We remain cautiously optimistic and expect the crude oil prices to remain in the range of US$ 83-87/bbl in the near future. While geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions are potential hurdles, we're prepared to navigate these uncertainties with agility and efficiency.”

He further added, “We are pleased to inform that the Board of Directors has recommended issue of bonus shares in the ratio of one equity share for every one existing equity share. This is subject to approval by the shareholders of the company.”

Over 150 linemen and linewomen from over 40 State and Private Transmission and Distribution Companies, from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Delhi visited the National capital to participate in the celebration.

The theme for Lineman Diwas celebration was ‘Seva, Suraksha, Swabhiman’ signifying the Dedication, Service and Sacrifice of the frontline heroes of the power sector. During the event, linemen also had the opportunity to exchange ideas and share safety best practices, fostering collective learning within the power industry. A special display of the various safety equipment and tools were arranged, allowing guests to learn and share more about the best practices implemented. Additionally, videos screened at the event highlighted the importance of workplace safety and incidents prevention by various Transcos and Discoms. This collaborative effort empowered linemen to draw insights from their peers, broaden their perspectives, and reinforce effective safety protocols, thereby promoting a safer working environment for all.

Through a special video message, Sh. Raj Kumar Singh, Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Govt. of India conveyed, "The celebration of Lineman Day is a start of a culture of greater appreciation and applauds for the unrelenting efforts of the frontline workers of the power sector. We take immense pride in recognizing their invaluable contribution who work even in the face of challenges like adverse weather and unforeseen crises.”

With women breaking the stereotype that jobs are gender specific, it was heartening to welcome 9 ambitious women comprising linewomen, technicians, and engineers from some Discoms & Transcos – from Bihar, Karnataka, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand. The event was also graced by Ms. Baljeet Kaur, an Indian mountain climber with many mountaineering feats registered to her name, who inspired the audience with her story.

The discussions centered around the pivotal role of CBG in India's energy transition, emphasizing its significance as a green fuel and its contribution to the SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) initiative.

The workshop was followed by a visit to a CBG plant, providing participants with firsthand experience and insights into CBG production processes. This hands-on approach aimed to further enhance understanding and collaboration in the CBG sector.

Dignitaries at the Groundbreaking Ceremony of Optimera Energy’s Piped Natural Gas Distribution Facility at the Lagos Free Zone

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony held at the zone on January 9, 2024, the Managing Director of Optimera Energy, Mrs. Audrey Joe-Ezigbo, disclosed that the infrastructure is comprised of a 25MMScf/D City Gate Station, scalable to 100MMScf/D, together with necessary ancillary infrastructure which includes 10km distribution lines within the zone as well as a 6.5km x 10 inches gas pipeline from the Escravos – Lagos Pipeline System tie-in point in the Lekki corridor outside the zone to Optimera City Gate Station at the Lagos Free zone.

Mrs. Audrey Joe-Ezigbo explained that Optimera Energy signed a 20-year Gas Infrastructure Development Agreement (GIDA) with the Lagos Free Zone Company (LFZC) to connect off-takers to our gas distribution infrastructure within the zone.

“The LFZC has invested over $2.5 billion in building a world-class facility integrated with Lekki Deep Seaport in the Zone, and we are excited to be part of this infrastructural development in our nation, Nigeria, particularly as this project is fully aligned with the nation’s Decade of Gas aspirations,” she said.
 

She added that Optimera Energy was established to address gaps in energy access while creating sustainable value for its stakeholders. According to her, "We are committed to championing Nigeria’s energy transition to cleaner fuels by leveraging on the Nation’s abundant Natural Gas low-carbon resources. We are working to ensure that Nigeria’s Natural Gas resources are responsibly and efficiently utilized from the upstream and downstream sectors of the value chain. In his remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, described the project as a significant milestone in the country’s journey toward a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.

While congratulating Optimera Energy for its visionary approach and commitment to advancing the nation’s energy landscape, Ekpo explained that the development of a 25 million standard cubic feet per day City Gate Station, scalable to 100 million standard cubic feet per day, along with the necessary ancillary infrastructure reflects not only the company’s dedication but also a shared vision for a thriving and resilient Nigeria.

“Natural Gas is a pivotal component in our energy matrix, offering cleaner and more efficient solutions. The round table aimed to discuss challenges experienced in the adoption of the mandatory Solar DC Cable Standard, as prescribed by the Quality Control Order, throughout the planning, design, and installation phases of Solar PV systems. Additionally, it called for collaborative efforts among industry stakeholders to propose viable solutions to these challenges, intending to present these recommendations to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

By fostering collaboration among stakeholders across the industry - including manufacturers, installers, and regulatory bodies - the roundtable set the stage for collective advocacy and action. This effort has marked a significant step forward in promoting a safer, more reliable, and sustainable future.

Dr. Ashish Kumar, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) said, “The objective behind QC was to introduce quality into the Indian manufacturer system. When the standards are released, they are voluntary; it is up to the manufacturer whether to use the ISI mark on their product. Because of the QC, the imports of substandard products also get restricted, creating an awareness amongst buyers. There is an urgent need to maintain quality, particularly in products where safety is most important.”

Shri Ashok Kumar Rajput, Central Electricity Authority of India (CEA) said, “There is a need for Quality Control awareness programs at all levels and to focus on the wellness and promotion of Quality Control Order. Addressing the issue of poor quality and substandard materials in solar DC cables is critical for safety. While material availability and timely supply are a concern, other insulation materials could be recycled with the help of R&D in addition to copper, which is already highly recyclable.”

Solar DC Cables are crucial part of solar PV systems, responsible for transmitting the direct current generated by photovoltaic panels to the inverter and subsequently into the electrical grid. Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems have witnessed remarkable growth and adoption in India as an eco-friendly and cost-effective source of sustainable energy. However, the efficiency of solar PV systems is reliant on a number of factors, including the quality and safety of its components, with Solar DC Cables being a critical element.

The use of non-standard Solar DC Cables poses severe safety hazards, adversely impact system performance and lead to costly maintenance and repairs. To address these concerns and uphold the safety and reliability of these systems, regulatory authorities have mandated Solar DC Cables standards through Quality Control Order (QCOs).

While there are established quality product and installation standards, there is a notable opportunity to enhance awareness in the solar PV industry.
