The research conducted by Dr Surjit Sahoo from the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research, on Sodium-Ion Batteries for Extreme Temperature and by Prof. Kiran Mangalampalli from Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Indentiation – calibrated smart fibre sensors were commended for their niche initiatives that could develop sensors and batteries that withstand high-altitudes and temperatures and can be used in modern artillery. Dr Kamat advised SRM University–AP to collaborate closely with scientists from specialised DRDO laboratories to advance its research initiatives.

Dr Samir also commented that there was a strong role for universities and private institutions in strengthening defence innovation and research. The growing engagement from universities is seen as critical to achieving national technology leadership and self-reliance.

Dr P Sathyanarayanan, Pro-Chancellor of SRM University-AP, stated that he envisions transforming the university into a world-class institution, distinguished for its excellence in emerging domains such as Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Technologies, Green Hydrogen, and Health Engineering, while actively contributing to the nation’s defence research ecosystem.

The visit assumes particular significance in the backdrop of the Union Budget presented post Operation Sindoor, which has accorded Defence Services an unprecedented allocation of INR 7.85 lakh crore for FY 2026–27. This represents 2% of the estimated GDP for the coming financial year and reflects a 15.19% increase over the Budget Estimates of FY 2025–26. Defence expenditure now accounts for 14.67% of total Central Government spending, the highest among all ministries, underscoring the strategic importance of national security alongside economic development.

The Budget has reinforced a carefully calibrated security–development–self-reliance balance, widely seen as being in the best long-term interest of the nation. Recent disruptions in global supply chains and the increasing prioritisation of domestic requirements over foreign suppliers have once again highlighted the urgency of import substitution and indigenisation, not merely for operational sustenance but for future defence modernisation.

In line with this approach, the Ministry of Defence has further strengthened its policy framework by earmarking INR 1.39 lakh crore—nearly 75% of the Capital Acquisition budget—for procurement from domestic industries in FY 2026–27. Such targeted budgetary support reassures Indian manufacturers about long-term demand visibility, encourages fresh investments, and enables domestic players to assume a progressively larger role in the capability development of the Armed Forces.

During the visit, Tuhin A. Sinha interacted with Nagender Parashar, CEO and Director, Parashar Future Defence Technologies, and the senior technical team. He was briefed on the company’s end-to-end drone development lifecycle, encompassing design, in-house research, precision manufacturing, testing, and deployment—all carried out within India. The interaction showcased Parashar’s emphasis on engineering excellence, quality assurance, and mission-ready performance, reinforcing its reputation as a reliable Indian product brand serving both defence and select civilian applications.

With nearly 28% of the total defence allocation directed towards capital expenditure, upcoming acquisition programmes are expected to cover next-generation fighter aircraft, smart and lethal weapons, ships and submarines, unmanned aerial vehicles, drones, and specialised platforms. In this evolving procurement landscape, companies such as Parashar Future Defence Technologies are increasingly positioned as credible MSME partners, capable of delivering agile, technology-driven indigenous solutions aligned with future operational needs.

The visit also highlighted Haryana’s emergence as an important node in India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, supported by a strong industrial base, skilled workforce, and improving infrastructure. MSMEs like Parashar Industries are moving steadily up the value chain—from manufacturing to design-led, innovation-driven product development—while contributing to employment generation and regional economic growth under the Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and Viksit Bharat initiatives.

Speaking after the visit, Tuhin A. Sinha observed that the work being undertaken at Parashar Future Defence Technologies reflects the outcomes of sustained reforms in defence procurement, private sector participation, and ease of doing business. He noted that Indian MSMEs are now playing an increasingly central role in innovation and advanced manufacturing, with direct implications for national security, industrial competitiveness, and job creation.

Nagender Parashar said that the company’s growth mirrors the confidence created by policy stability and a supportive industrial ecosystem. He added that Parashar Future Defence Technologies continues to invest in research, skilled engineering talent, and robust quality systems, enabling the delivery of high-performance indigenous solutions while contributing meaningfully to India’s defence preparedness.

State-of-the-art R&D centre in Chennai

The expanded R&D Centre will have 6 dedicated labs, including a massive 4,000-sq-ft Electronics Warfare Center, to cater to defence innovation in today’s fast-changing world. Further, over next 6 months, BBBS also plans to increase the headcount at the R&D centre by 40 specialized researchers from fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Electronic Warfare and Nanotechnology. This will enable the company to cater to new projects, as well as its national and international orders with greater agility and efficiency.

The car was unveiled during Vietnam’s 80th National Day celebrations in Hanoi. Two models stood at the center of the Vietnam Exposition Center - one pristine, the other scarred by testing. The second carried the marks of 440 live bullets and 11 controlled explosions, endured during testing at Germany’s Beschussamt Ulm facility. The results confirmed that the vehicle could withstand fire from military-grade rifles such as the AK-47 and M14, and survive detonations from DM51 grenades and mines placed beneath its floor and roof.

Underneath nearly five tons of armor, two electric motors deliver a combined 455 horsepower and propel the vehicle from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in under ten seconds. Despite the weight, the Lạc Hồng remains composed and quiet, its dual-motor layout providing balanced traction and stability. The run flat tires allow continued travel for up to 80 kilometers after being punctured, while optional systems, such as air filtration, automated fire suppression, satellite communication, and emergency sirens, enable the car to function as a true “mobile fortress.”

Meeting VR7 required more than adding armor. VinFast’s engineers redesigned the vehicle’s frame and battery enclosure to absorb shock without electrical failure, balancing structural rigidity and weight distribution through months of simulation and field testing.

Yet the Lac Hong 900 LX does not rely on technology alone. Its design carries deep cultural meaning. The grille pattern, inspired by Vietnam’s bamboo and Đông Sơn bronze drums, blends traditional motifs with modern geometry. A gold-plated Lạc bird, a national emblem, sits on the hood. Inside, Golden Nanmu wood, once used in imperial palaces, lines the cabin beside hand-stitched Nappa leather and 24-karat-gold-plated details. The rear lounge compartment, separated by a soundproof glass partition, features reclining seats with heating, cooling, and memory functions. Every surface, from air vents to door trims, reflects Vietnamese craftsmanship executed to international luxury standards.

Automotive experts in Vietnam regard the model as “a declaration of capability.” Achieving VPAM VR7 places VinFast’s creation alongside vehicles like the Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guard, BMW 7 Series Protection, and Cadillac One used by heads of state. According to Nguyễn Hoàng Lâm, a senior automotive safety researcher at the Vietnam Automobile Engineering Institute who has worked on crash-resistance and certification programs, this level of compliance “demands precision only certain manufacturers can achieve.”

The armored version is derived from VinFast’s VF 9 SUV platform but heavily modified: its chassis extended by 20 centimeters and the third row removed to create a spacious executive cabin. Every section of the body, including door frames and roof joints, was re-engineered for load-bearing armor. The electric motors were recalibrated to handle the increased mass, while the 123-kWh battery pack was reinforced to resist deformation and thermal shock.

Beyond performance, the Lac Hong 900 LX reflects Vietnam’s expanding industrial ecosystem. The collaboration with INKAS brought global expertise in composite armor, while VinFast’s automated plant in Hải Phòng supplied precision assembly under strict digital monitoring.

Twelve units - two armored and ten standard - have been delivered to Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for official duties, marking the first time international dignitaries are transported in domestically produced vehicles built to global protection standards.

To observers, the Lac Hong 900 LX signals Vietnam’s growing self-confidence in advanced manufacturing. In less than a decade, VinFast has evolved from newcomer to an automaker capable of meeting the world’s strictest ballistic and electronic-safety benchmarks.

The achievement also mirrors a regional shift. Across Asia, countries such as India and Indonesia are strengthening their domestic EV sectors. Vietnam’s success shows that with coordination, investment, and purpose, emerging economies can achieve technological parity faster than expected.

For VinFast, the armored EV is not an endpoint but a foundation. Its lessons in structural reinforcement, crash management, and secure energy storage will influence future consumer and commercial models. Bomb shells are not merely metal casings - they must withstand intense pressures during handling, firing, and detonation. A single flaw can compromise safety and effectiveness, making forging - whether cold, hot, or isothermal - indispensable for ensuring internal structural integrity. This process ensures the resulting shells offer maximum strength, fatigue resistance, and dimensional accuracy.

India’s Modernization Journey in Shell Production

Despite the high stakes, India’s artillery shell output remains comparatively modest - though exact production numbers are not publicly detailed, the escalation in defence output and renewed policy focus suggests a significant push is underway.
 

Traditionally, shell manufacturing in India relied on manual forging, semi automation, and labor-intensive machining. Now, a shift is underway - embracing hydraulic forging presses, hot/die-forging systems, CNC machining, robotic handling, and digital inspection. This transition is steering the sector toward precision, consistency, and the global quality benchmarks needed for modern warfare.

Globally, shell production is being ramped up significantly:

The India-Israel Industrial R&D and Technological Innovation Fund (I4F) is a joint initiative by India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Israel Innovation Authority which supports technological innovation in healthcare, energy, water, agriculture, and industrial technologies.
 

Starting in September 2025, the 24-month project will leverage BBBS’s strengths in autonomous UAV platforms and Foresight’s advanced 3D perception and multi-spectral vision systems. The funding approval from I4F, for 50% of the project's budget, marks a significant step forward in supporting the development and commercialization of next generation drones capable of navigating complex, cluttered, and dangerous industrial environments without human pilots or GPS support. These drones are expected to improve safety, reduce operational costs, and enhance efficiency by performing inspections in hazardous and hard-to-reach environments in industries such as oil and gas, mining, chemical processing, power generation, and critical infrastructure.

Solving Problems Where Traditional Drones Fail
Traditional GPS-dependent drones often underperform or become inoperable in industrial spaces such as tunnels, power plants, and chemical refineries, where GPS signal loss, high heat, dust, electromagnetic interference, or corrosive conditions present real risks.
 

The jointly developed system will address these limitations with AI-based navigation algorithms, sensor fusion for real-time situational awareness, and ruggedized hardware for performance in confined and thermally unstable spaces. Precision Strike with Missile Systems:

The operation demonstrated India’s readiness across multiple domains. Akash missile systems and Supersonic cruise missiles like BrahMos played a decisive role, delivering precision strikes with speed and accuracy. These missiles not only offered a tactical edge but also showcased how indigenous missile programs have matured into globally benchmarked platforms. This progress is a direct outcome of the visionary leadership of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who laid the foundation and build the institutional structure through the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), and the continued dedication of successive generations of leaders, scientists and engineers who transformed that vision into reality.

Electronic Warfare and Radars

Electronic warfare systems developed by DRDO further ensured that Indian forces could dominate the electromagnetic spectrum. These systems enabled the disruption of enemy communications and surveillance infrastructure, a critical factor in neutralizing early threats and maintaining battlefield advantage. This advanced, vehicle-mounted counter-drone solution is designed to neutralize the growing risk from rogue UAVs through an integrated multi-layered architecture. The D4 system synergizes key subsystems, including RF-based drone detection, radar tracking, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) identification, and a combination of soft-kill and hard-kill capabilities. It effectively employs RF jammers to disrupt hostile communication links, while electro-optical tracking ensures visual confirmation and precision targeting. For kinetic neutralization, the system incorporates hard-kill mechanisms capable of engaging and destroying the aerial threat, ensuring a robust and adaptive response across diverse operational scenarios.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) marked a significant achievement in 2020 by swiftly developing and deploying an indigenous anti-drone system during the challenging peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This system was operationally deployed near Delhi's Red Fort on August 15, 2020, to safeguard the 74th Independence Day celebrations, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address .

These systems  neutralized some of the hostile drone incursions, protecting both frontline troops and strategic assets. Developed as part of a Development cum production partnership initiative under the leadership of DRDO’s DG, Electronics Cluster, the D4 project has emerged as a powerful case study in co-development and battlefield relevance.

Visionary leadership:

Long before drone warfare captured international focus, the Electronics Cluster at DRDO had initiated the development of modular, scalable counter-drone systems. The D4 system was the result of this proactive strategy—designed for multi-sensor integration and rapid deployment across various conflict zones. The path adopted by visionaries is to have the PSUs and Indian private companies as key development partners in the program.

DRDO – industry ecosystem:

Unistring Tech Solutions Pvt. Ltd.  (UTS) a Subsidiary of Zen Technologies is one of the key private sector partners involved in the D4 program. The company was entrusted with the supply of Key RF and digital sub systems. This collaboration was marked not just by technical delivery, but by deep engagement with DRDO throughout the lifecycle of the system—from early design reviews to live field trials.

Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal Highlights India's Commitment to Global Cooperation and Anti-Terrorism During Slovenia Visit

The visit comes as part of India’s broader diplomatic outreach following the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, under a national initiative titled Operation Sindoor—a concerted effort to build international consensus against terrorism and ensure global solidarity on this critical issue.

During high-level engagements in Ljubljana today, Shri Ashok Mittal met with:

Vajra Sentinel Systems

Designed to address the dynamic aerial threat environment, the Vajra Sentinel has demonstrated superior performance when compared to both domestic and global counterparts. Developed entirely in India with over five years of intensive R&D, field trials, and carrying the prestigious DGAQA clearance, the system has successfully qualified user acceptance tests on the first attempt, a feat which eludes even the most seasoned defence enterprises.

Vajra Sentinel Systems

Asked to respond to significant drone threats during Operation Sindoor, the young team at BBBS were able to accelerate and rapidly deliver systems to support the Indian Army and Airforce. During heightened tensions at the border, BBBS’ Vajra systems exceeded expectations by neutralizing multiple foreign-origin drones demonstrating its operational reliability and strategic value.

Tarang Shakti 2024, an international defense and aviation exhibition, featured an extensive array of military equipment, spare parts, and aviation technology. Biggen Aerospace: A Major Player in High altitude and Heavy Weight logistics UAVs

The discussions during the event were focused on the growth trajectory of Indian defence sector and its needs from the steel industry to ensure national security and reduce reliance on imports.

Country’s defence sector has started producing and exporting indigenous goods with annual domestic defence production, reached nearly Rs. 1.27 trillion in FY24, a 16.7 percent rise from Rs. 1.09 trillion in the previous fiscal year. In addition, the sector also recorded highest-ever defence exports, reaching $2.5 billion in the fiscal year 2023-24. This significant milestone marks a 25% increase from the $2 billion reported in FY23.

However, the sector still faces challenges like inadequate availability of input materials domestically, which are used for producing defence specific products like special alloy grade material and light weight high tensile products etc. India still ranks amongst the largest defence and arms importing nation accounting for 9.8 percent of the global arms sales. The recent advances in steel manufacturing, fabrication technologies, light weighting of steel was highlighted during the course of the event.

In this regard, Sh. Bandaru Dattatraya mentioned that Defence Ministry has set the target of 70 percent for sourcing of arms and guns produced from indigenous material by FY2027 with the possibility of broader pathways for smaller as well as large scale players. He further added that Defence Ministry has provided level playing field to domestic manufacturers of around 101 arms and ammunitions by planning imports substitution model.

He concluded by adding that this initiative of the government has led to substitute the imports of few defence related equipment including arms and ammunitions like helicopters, ATV, and small range missiles, etc.

In the recent Union Budget of FY25 announced by Fin Min Sh. Nirmala Sitharaman, Ministry of Defence (MoD) has been allocated Rs. 6,21,940.85 crore, the highest among the Ministries. The allocation to MoD for FY 2024-25 is higher by approx. Rs. one lakh crore (18.43%) over the allocation for FY 2022-23 and 4.79% more than allocation of FY 2023-24. Indian steel industry is thriving to supply its steel and reduce the reliance on imports of the defence sector.

This event will bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to explore the critical role of steels and metals in strengthening India’s defence capabilities.

The primary objective was to explore avenues for mutually beneficial partnerships in Tamil Nadu's burgeoning industries, with a specific focus on the Aerospace and Defence sector.

As part of this comprehensive visit, the delegation also organized an Aerospace and Defence Roundtable in Bengaluru. In his address, the Honourable Minister welcomed 20 Aerospace and Defence companies, including leading PSUs, to the roundtable discussion. He highlighted that Tamil Nadu is a manufacturing powerhouse with a strong presence in diverse industries such as automotive, electronics, electric vehicle (EV), and renewable component manufacturing. The state is proactively transitioning towards advanced manufacturing, solidifying its position as an emerging hub for research and development (R&D).

Leading players across industries have expressed their trust in the state by establishing their R&D centres and Global Capability Centers (GCCs) within its borders, creating an environment rich in expertise and innovation. This positions Tamil Nadu as an ideal destination for Aerospace and Defence manufacturing and cutting-edge research.

Some of the highlights at The Roundtable:

• Expansion of Hosur as an Engine Manufacturing Cluster: The discussion revolved around the strategic potential of Hosur to evolve into a specialized hub for engine manufacturing, underscoring Tamil Nadu's commitment to advancing manufacturing capabilities in the Aerospace and Defence sectors.

• Focus on Western Tamil Nadu: Regions such as Coimbatore-Sulur and Varapatti provide ample land and suitable infrastructure for various Aerospace and Defence endeavours.

• Drone Testing Facilities: Tamil Nadu is developing a dedicated facility for testing drones in Kancheepuram District.

• Space Sector Advancements in Kulasekarapattinam: The HAL and L&T consortium will contribute to space-related programs near Kulasekarapattinam.

Expressing immense happiness for participating at the Roundtable, Dr. Rajaa said: “Tamil Nadu has one of the two defence industrial corridors in India. Being an advanced manufacturing hub, there is quite a bit of defence manufacturing already happening in the State. We are confident that the companies we met yesterday will make further investments in Tamil Nadu.

During the interaction with aerospace and defence manufacturers and companies from many other sectors, I conveyed to them the message of Honourable Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru M.K.Stalin about the thriving industrial ecosystem in Tamil Nadu.”

Mr. V. Vishnu IAS, MD & CEO, Guidance, highlighted the state's unwavering dedication to offering exclusive incentives, especially for employment generation and value enhancement. He also outlined the Tamil Nadu Aerospace & Defence Industrial Policy 2022 and Tamil Nadu R&D Policy 2022, which demonstrates the state's firm commitment to assisting companies operating in these domains.

Tamil Nadu has several strategic advantages, such as well-connected infrastructure, robust transportation networks, and a thriving ecosystem for manufacturing. The state is further strengthened by four major ports, namely Chennai, Ennore, Thoothukudi, and Kattupalli. These ports play a pivotal role in imports and exports and maintain strong connections with the global supply chain.

Representatives from various companies appealed to the government to further assist small and medium-sized enterprises engaged in aerospace and defence. They sought government support for innovation and testing of new technologies.

Additionally, Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa extended a special invitation to the upcoming Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet scheduled for January 7th and 8th, 2024, in Chennai. The event will shine a spotlight on several vital sectors, including Aerospace and Defence, underlining the state's commitment to fostering innovation and attracting investments in these critical areas.

The Chennai-based KCP – Heavy Engineering Unit handed over the first Integrated Air Drop Test - Crew Module structure (IADT-CM) to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) here today. Dr. V.L. Indira Dutt, Chairperson and Managing Director, The KCP Group handed over the structure to Mr. R. Hutton, Acting Director, Human Space Flight Center, ISRO, at a function held at KCP-Heavy Engineering Unit’s integrated facility in Thiruvotriyur. 
 

KCP Hands Over Integrated Air Drop Test - Crew Module Structure to ISRO, Meant for Gaganyaan Mission

ISRO had earlier placed an order with KCP for the fabrication of two IADT crew module structures, both meant for the demonstration of its Technology Preparedness levels before carrying out Gaganyaan spacecraft, India’s first human space flight programme. The first IADT-CM is fabricated at KCP’s integrated facility for heavy casting, machining, and fabrication in Thiruvotriyur. The second one will be supplied to ISRO by March 2024.

The first IADT-CM weighs 3,120 kg and measures 3.1 diameter and 2.6-meter height. It is made of light alloy (aluminum) and 15CDV6 steel. The structure comprises more than 100 components that were joined together with welding, riveting and threaded fastening techniques. It will accommodate major subsystems like parachute system, pyros, avionics, and buoyance augmentation system.

While ISRO designed the IADT-CM structure, KCP-Heavy Engineering Unit fabricated and realised it at its in-house facilities. The fabrication of the structure is a challenging job, involving critical forming, precision machining, and stringent assembly required of both aluminum and high strength steel. Thanks to KCP’s infrastructure and skilled workmanship the realisation of this critical hardware is made possible. 

ISRO’s Gaganyaan Mission envisages launching a crew of two to three members to an orbit of 400 km for a 3-day mission and bringing them back safely to the earth by facilitating the landing in Indian sea waters. The spacecraft mainly consists of Crew Module and Service Module. The CM structure, fabricated at KCP, simulates the shape and size of the actual Gaganyaan crew module. The Integrated Air Drop Test will be performed using an Indian Air Force helicopter by taking the Crew Module structure to an altitude of 3.6 to 4 km to validate the deceleration system (parachute & pyro’s) performance.

Book “Kargil: Ek Yatri Ki Jubani” released, a true tribute to martyrs of Kargil War

The book and illustrations - "Kargil: Ek Yatri Ki Jubani" - authored by renowned writer Shri Rishi Raj, and published by Prabhat Prakashan, impeccably portrays the lives of the heroes of the Kargil War on the canvas of patriotism so that they could be a fountainhead of inspiration for children who could learn the values of the paramount sacrifice made by the Indian Army for the nation. 

The book, "Kargil: Ek Yatri Ki Jubani", fairly dwells on the braveness of soldiers who took back every inch of India's land by giving a befitting reply to the enemies in the Kargil War which officially ended on July 26, 1999 leading India to the victory over Pakistan that ventilated a firm message to the whole world: Indian Army would not back down at any cost, when it comes to the national interests. 

Author Rishi Raj himself visited the war zones of the Kargil War to weave the story with the thread of patriotism. In a sense of true tributes to the brave soldiers, the author dedicated the book "Kargil: Ek Yatri Ki Jubani" to all the 527 martyrs who laid down their lives for India in the Kargil War which posed multiple challenges to the Indian armed forces. 

The books and illustrations were released by the families of the martyrs, underlying the significance of the Kargil Vijay Diwas and giving rich tributes to the brave soldiers. Captain Vikram Batra's illustration was released by his elder sister Mrs. Nutan Batra, while Captain Vijayant Thapar's illustration was released by his mother Mrs. Tripta Thapar and father Colonel Thapar. Mrs. Alka Ahuja, wife of Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, who sacrificed his life in the Kargil War; and Mrs. Bhawna Dwivedi, wife of Major CB Dwivedi, were also honoured on this occasion.

Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar, who was awarded Param Vir Chakra in the Kargil War, graced the occasion by his presence.  

Author Rishi Raj, who is working as Joint General Manager in Delhi Metro, is known for his love for travelling whose footprints have encompassed all 28 states and 8 Union territories in the country. Safe Arctic 2023 Exercise Participants Complete over 100 Experimental Research Tasks

The group from the Unified State System of Prevention and Response to Emergencies included more than 3,500 specialists and 650 units of equipment during the exercises. Over two days of practical training, the rescuers completed 110 experimental research tasks, and also undertook practical actions to provide assistance from the air, on water, underground, and on land. Representatives of 16 foreign states, including Saudi Arabia, Serbia, and Iran, observed the actions of the Russian rescuers. Representatives of more than 20 federal executive bodies, ten businesses, and two state corporations took part in the experimental research exercises. 

“We must be ready to respond quickly to any threats and challenges that may arise in this region. During the exercises on the territory of nine regions, forces from various ministries, agencies, state corporations, and organizations that are part of the system [of the Unified State System of Prevention and Response to Emergencies] will practice 16 scenarios based on the most typical risks for Russia’s Arctic region,” said EMERCOM Minister Alexander Kurenkov, who personally supervised the exercises.

Kurenkov said the exercises will enable the EMERCOM to objectively assess the readiness of manpower and resources to act in extreme climates and difficult terrain and more effectively organize further work to ensure security in the Arctic.

The business part of the exercise programme included the Research and Training Conference ‘Prevention and Elimination of Emergencies in the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation’, during which experts discussed how to simulate and assess the risk of emergencies in the Far North, prevent and minimize the consequences of accidents, and compensate for damages in the Arctic, among other topics. In addition, during roundtables, experts spoke about how to draft legislation to prevent and eliminate emergencies in the northern latitudes and organize interagency scientific research to ensure comprehensive security in the Russian Arctic.

“I would like to particularly note the high level of professionalism, skill, and coordination of the actions of the Russian rescuers, whose work provides convincing evidence of the Russian Federation’s readiness to responsibly fulfil its international obligations. Today’s exercises and subsequent ones, which aim to prevent and eliminate emergencies, with the direct involvement and coordinating role of the Russian EMERCOM, will continue to strengthen the potential for prevention and response both in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation and in the Arctic as a whole,” Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chair of the Arctic Senior Officials Nikolay Korchunov said.

In the run-up to the exercises, from 27 March to 7 April, EMERCOM carried out a research expedition in the Arctic to practice the latest rescue methods in the event of possible accidents and conduct comparative tests of Russian-made models of all-terrain vehicles, equipment, gear, and property that are designed to ensure safety in the Arctic. Over 12 days, the 76 participants covered more than 1,600 kilometres across three Russian regions - the Nenets Autonomous District, the Komi Republic, and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District. In addition, the Safe Arctic 2023 exercises were accompanied by Safety Week at kindergartens, schools, as well as secondary vocational and higher education institutions in all Arctic regions. Students learned about life safety, fire safety, safety in natural and man-made environments, and evacuation training.

The previous Safe Arctic exercises were held in September 2021 in seven regions of Russia’s Arctic zone. Roughly 6,000 specialists simulated emergency response scenarios, during which 47 new models of machinery, equipment, and methodologies were tested. The event also took place as part of Russia’s chairmanship of the Arctic Council.

Russia is chairing the Arctic Council in 2021-2023. A cross-cutting priority of Russia’s chairmanship is to ensure responsible governance for the sustainable development of the Arctic with a social, economic, and environmental balance. Key tasks for the Arctic include developing cooperation to prevent and respond to emergency situations. As part of its chairmanship, Russia intends to help strengthen cooperation in identifying and analysing the risks of natural and man-made emergencies, developing ways to prevent them, and improving measures to protect the population and territories against emergencies and fires.

Gratitude Week for Vardi 

They received and collected more than 1500 letters & emails in a span of 5 days. There were many emails sent by NRI’s living abroad. For most of them who wrote letter’s it was a like a dream come true, so many said that they could not believe that they were writing a letter of gratitude for a soldier and it would actually reach them and be read by a soldier. Right from 5 year old children drawing the National Flag and chanting ‘Jai Hind’ to Senior Citizens penning their thoughts and pouring their heart out, everyone was a part of the Vardi Gratitude Week. The drives were filled with patriotism.

14th January was Veterans Day, Rohit cycled from Pune to Mumbai a total distance of 157 Kms as a mark of Gratitude for the Soldiers. And on 15th January all the collected letters were handed over to the Army in a ceremony at the Colaba Military Station, Mumbai. From there the letters would get sent to the borders and various units throughout the country. One could only envision a soldier reading a letter coming from an unknown person, simply expressing pure gratitude.

Lord’s Mark Industries, a diversified business group, forays into defence manufacturing by launching Brahamastra Defense Techno Products Limited. Shri Anil Kakodkar, former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India, former secretary to the Government of India, has consented as the key member of the advisory board to provide strategic guidance to build defence technology for the new venture.

The Mumbai-based business group invested 50 crores for R&D and to set up the 25,000 sq. ft. defence manufacturing facility in Mhape. The unit has the production capacity to generate an annual revenue of appx. Rs. 200 crores initially. The company will produce a variety of Reflex Sights (Holographic Sights), Thermal Imaging Sights, Telescopic Sights, Surveillance Systems (HHTIs and other day/night uncooled cameras), and Anti-Drone Systems. Lt. Col. Randeep Hundal’s inspiring and courageous character has caught the eyes of many. He was commissioned into The Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry on 2nd Sep 2000. An alumnus of Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai he was part of Short Service Course (SSC) - 70. He served with JAKLI for 5 years and resigned on 01 Sep 2005 after successfully completing his tenure. On Oct 2011 Lt. Col. Hundal took commission in Territorial Army and is presently posted in Delhi. Lt. Col. Hundal has participated in various counter insurgency operations.

Insighteon Wargame - "The aero engine eco system in India: Identifying and overcoming barriers"
 

The small gas turbine engine market in India for next 20 years was estimated to be more than INR 60,000 Crores. There was a unanimous consensus to the fact that by not indigenising aero gas turbine engines, the nation runs a risk of compromising national security. The rising demand and diversity of applications for gas turbine engines due to increasing usage of unmanned aircraft, drones, UCAVs and low-cost cruise missiles, combined with export restrictions placed by foreign governments on engines of UAVs/missiles and components thereof, make future strategic concerns even more dire.

Consolidation of ongoing engine development programs and instituting a National Commission for Aero Engine Development to bring in unification of vision as well as unification of national assets available in the engine development eco system, was the base theme which ran through the conduct of the war-game. It was predicted that co-development models will only end up as licensed production, as they have done in the past, with major work share arriving from overseas. Therefore, it was felt necessary to nurture design talent and go through the learning curves of experience and productivity without shortcuts.

The war-game eroded a common belief that the private sector is capable of providing only engine components to government institutions and foreign OEMs. The confidence exuded by the private sector to take on complete development of smaller gas turbine engines, if given a chance, was encouraging. The analysts recommended that efforts should be made to involve private industries with identified academic institutions, to take up the challenge of developing three to four small engines for identified aerial platforms in a mission mode, through funded programs, which if required could be mentored and managed by technology labs or the user. However, there has to be an institutional mechanism to support this.

The analysts were of the opinion that, keeping the strategic necessity and the lost time in mind, it would be preferable to follow a 2 plus 1 model, where there is concurrent development of smaller engines by one DRDO lab/DPSU and two private sector entities, in order to build in competition and redundancy. It was felt that the government’s aim of increasing private sector participation in the defence sector is not presently backed with developmental orders at ground level, as far as gas turbine engines were concerned.

Another recommendation of the analysts was that engine development institutions should increase their interaction with the academia and integrate them as a R&D partner. The SPV model was recommended for development of the 110 kN engine whereas the Kaveri was considered suitable for all platforms from 3 tons to 8 tons like the unmanned fighter aircrafts, the Remotely Piloted Strike Aircraft (RPSA) or the Ghatak UCAV.

It was estimated that a delay of approximately six years could be attributed to the absence of HAETF/FTB and other component levels in country test facilities, during the development of the Kaveri engine. Testing overseas is impractical and exposes critical technology to other nations. The analysts were hopeful that in future establishment of in-country engine test facilities will be given the highest priority if aero engines are to be developed in India.
