Students of The British School, New Delhi, now have a new, state-of-the-art building with world class facilities. H. E. Sir James David Bevan KCMG, British High Commissioner to India, inaugurated the new building at Chanakyapuri amidst school officials, teachers, students and parents.

Speaking at the occasion, Sir Bevan said that he was honoured to inaugurate the school. ‘It sends out a powerful message to everyone that the next 50 years will be special and even more successful. Buildings are really important in shaping the future of the existing students and of the students to come in the near future’, he added.

The new infrastructure emphasises on making the learning process a motivating and engaging one for students. ‘We wish to build on our student-centred approach by offering a stimulating environment in which they can thrive by developing both their intellectual and social skills; the new facilities will help us do just that’ said the Director, Dr Nick Argent.

The building, designed to be eco-friendly and ‘green’, has been accredited under the stringent GRIHA rating. It boasts of double walled construction for heat insulation, high efficiency air-conditioning systems, solar energy usage, and waste water recycling and treatment.

Ample play areas have been provided for Nursery and Reception classes with generous breakout spaces on every floor for all year groups. An improved library will see the primary and secondary sections located in one vertical stack linked by a dedicated stairway.

In closing Dr Argent said, ‘We had been looking forward to this move with great enthusiasm and are delighted that the new building enhances our ability to offer students in Delhi a first class international education.’

The building has been designed by Morphogenesis, one of India's leading architectural practices.

About The British School

The British School in New Delhi is unique. Not just because it is home to a rich cultural mix of almost 850 students with over 55 nationalities ranging from ages 3 to 18 years. Nor because it operates a not-for-profit system with an inclusive approach. The reason is simple – it is more than a school. It is a family.

The school was started in July 1963 by a group of British parents with 40 students representing six nationalities in a residential colony. They were supported by the British High Commissioner. In 1969, the school moved to its present site in Chanakyapuri, the heart of diplomatic area.

Today it is still owned and managed by students’ parents who form The British School Society.
