BEL Constructs Burns Ward for Udupi District Hospital

Navratna Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) has constructed a Burns ward above the Geriatric ward of the District Hospital, Udupi, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.

The Burns ward, comprising a male and female ward with two inpatient departments and two critical wards with a total of 12 beds were inaugurated by Mr U T Khader, Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka, on April 18, 2015. Mr M L Shanmukh, Director (HR), BEL, inaugurated the male ward and Ms Shobha Karandlaje, MP, Udupi-Chickmagalur, inaugurated the female ward. Mr Vinay Kumar Sorake, Minister for Urban Development, Government of Karnataka; Mr Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, Udupi; Dr Madhusudhan Nayak, District Surgeon in-charge, Government District Hospital, Udupi; Mr G Raghavendra Rao, Executive Director (HR)/BEL-Corporate Office; Mr Veeresh D Bevinamarad, GM (HR)/BEL-Bengaluru; and other senior officers of BEL were present.

The Burns ward was constructed by BEL at a cost of Rs.75 lakhs, at the request of the then Deputy Commissioner, Udupi, Dr M T Reju, IAS, and the District Surgeon, District Hospital, Udupi. The ward will meet the critical needs of people from the five districts of Udupi, Bhatkal, Kundapura, Chickmagalur and Shimoga.

BEL has built a ramp and staircase leading to the Burns ward on the first floor for the convenience of patients. It has also provided furniture and medical equipment for the ward, which will now be maintained by Lions, Udupi.

BEL pursues CSR activities in the areas of health care, education and skill development, rural development, sanitation and clean drinking water, environment sustainability and conservation of natural resources.
