Centre for Social Research hosted its parallel event during the 59th Commission on the Status of Women, in New York and discussed the initiatives by Government and NGOs to prevent Violence against Women.

A parallel event was organised by Centre for Social Research in New York on 12th March 2015 during the 59th Commission on the Status of Women. The event was based on the theme of ‘Initiatives to Prevent Violence against Women in Asia Pacific Region: Success Stories of Government and NGO Partnership’.

The event was led by Dr. Ranjana Kumari ( Director, CSR) in Church Centre United Nations, New York and graced by an esteemed panel of eminent activists like Carol H. Yost (Women’s Empowerment program, The Asia Foundation), Advocate Salma Ali (Executive Director, Bangladesh National Woman Lawyer’s Association), Sophie Hardefelt (Program Manager, Australian Women Against Violence Alliance), Bharati Silawal-Giri (General-Secretary, Institute of Public Policy and Action Research, Nepal) and Kara Brown (YWCA  Scotland).

Experts from across Asia Pacific discussed the growing issue of domestic violence in the region and highlighted successful models of NGO and Government partnerships. Along with this, a review of the measures taken up to prevent Violence against Women and the challenges faced were also reviewed.

“World’s largest and youngest democracy is making major strides towards gender equality and equity. We have come a long way since our independence. The journey has been of learning, overcoming hurdles and creating safe spaces for women. Though we have a long route ahead, I believe we are going to achieve our goal of a gender-just and sensitive society very soon.” Dr. Ranjana Kumari, Centre for Social Research

One major highlight of this event was sharing of the recommendations that Centre for Social Research gathered from the #YOUBeijing20 campaign (www.youbeijing20.in). The campaign reached out to thousands of youth across 10 different universities in India and collected their recommendations on the 12 critical areas of concern identified during 1995 Beijing Conference.

CSR is now geared up to host its second parallel event on 19th March 2015 in New York.
