Doctors from Manipal Hospitals, Goa Save a 5 Year Old Boy Suffering with a Critical Head Injury, in a Road Accident

Doctors from Manipal Hospitals Goa help in the miraculous recovery of a 5 year old child, admitted with a critical head injury, in a road accident. The boy is now recuperating.

The boy was admitted to the hospital in Panaji, Goa in an extremely critical state after a motor vehicle accident. He had a severe injury and was in a comatose state with irregular breathing, when bought to the hospital. According to medical reports, he was suffering from Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI), one of the most common and devastating types of head injury. The outcome is dire with 90% patients never recovering their consciousness and those who do recover, lead a life of significant impairment.

The CT brain of the boy was suggestive of multiple small hemorrhagic contusions in both frontal lobes and left thalamus. Also, the MRI brain showed multiple foci of blooming suggestive of hemorrhagic foci at the grey white matter interface in both frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital lobes, in the splenium of the corpus callosum ,left thalamus and in right pons

Dr. Prasad, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Manipal Hospitals, advised conservative management of the injury by electively intubated in view of low Glasgow coma scale at 5/15. He also recommended ventilating for 72 hours in view of the traumatic brain injury and other treatment measures for reducing intracranial pressure.

The boy has shown dramatic improvement on the Glasgow coma scale normalizing to 15/15. He has started taking oral feeds and recognizing his parents and is on the way to recovery. The doctors are delighted with the boy’s improvement and shall monitor his progress frequently.
