Nasscom Statement on Immigration Reforms Announced by Potus

Nov 21, 2014   18:21 IST
New Delhi, Delhi, India

The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) welcomed the proposed Executive Action by the President of the United States of America Barack Obama on immigrants in US, and stated that it will positively impact the Indian residents and skilled workers in the US. The relief measures were highlighted during President’s address to the nation today, where he announced that US is a nation of immigrants and highlighted the invaluable contributions skilled individuals from around the world have made to the US economy. He showcased the steps that will be taken to protect about 4-5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation while streamlining procedures to retain students and skilled workers who have been trained in the United States.

The salient features of the President’s Executive Action will be:

  • Modernize and streamline visa processes

  • Enhancements to OPT visa category to allow more workers to participate and those that do to stay longer

  • H-1B changes: Visas for foreign entrepreneurs

  • Faster green cards processing for skilled individuals

  • Enable the spouses to gain work authorization during their time in the US

  • L1 guidance: The administration intends to announce its intention to publish guidance on L-1B

Commenting on the development Mr. R. Chandrashekhar, President, NASSCOM said “This is a very positive development, especially for high skilled employees and entrepreneurs living in the US. However, we await specific details of the initiatives and understand that it would take time to phase them all in. We are extremely happy to note that these policies did not reflect the pointers from bill proposed earlier. NASSCOM will continue to engage with US government to maintain smooth trade relations in the coming years.”

NASSCOM with its members, advisors, allies and the Government of India has been constantly conveying the importance of India-centric companies and Indian talent to the US economy and will continue in its endeavours to sustain a healthy business environment. NASSCOM believes that these measures will help attract and retain talent in the US by addressing some of the operational and social issues thereby alleviating skills shortages to some extent.
