The onset of winter season sees Indians getting into the holiday planning mode to get away from the cold. Fuerteventurain Canary Islands offers the best value winter sun break for Indian families this year, according to an annual TripAdvisor cost comparison study conducted by independent research firm, Ipsos.
Fuerteventura,one of the Canary Islands and named Spain’s best rated island in the 2014 TripAdvisorTravellers’ Choice Islands awards, offers travellers a choice of almost 180 hotels, over 1,000 holiday rentals, almost 700 restaurants and over 300 attractions.
A week’s holiday for a family of four in Fuerteventura will only set you back by INR 51604, which is more than seven times cheaper than the price of the most expensive destination for a winter sun break at INR 388798 in Turks and Caicos, home to the number one Caribbean island in the 2014 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Islands Awards, Providenciales.
The results were taken from TripAdvisor’sTripIndex Winter Sun 2014, an annual report that compares the cost of a holiday in 29 winter sun destinations around the world. The study takes into account the cost of a week’s stay in a two bedroom holiday rental, one week’s car hire, basic self-catering groceries and dinner at a restaurant including drinks for a family of four this winter travel season (15 December – 31 March).
The Canary Islands are a clear winner for families this year as three are named in the top 10 most affordable destinations: Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife. The Caribbean emerges as the most expensive part of the world, laying claim to five of the ten most costly destinations.
When it comes to accommodation prices across the popular winter sun destinations, Turks and Caicos has the most expensive average rate for a week’s stay in a two bedroom holiday rental, coming in at INR 388798. For the price of one week in a holiday rental in Turks and Caicos, a family of four could have over 10 weeks in our very own Goa,with a holiday rental there costing just INR 34649 per week.
Tenerife is the cheapest destination to get around as the cost to hire a car for a family of four for one week comes in at INR 8782– around four times less than in St Lucia where hiring a car for a week will set a family back INR 34555.
Goais revealed as the cheapest place for a bite to eat and drink at just INR 2024 for a dinner out for four,INR 106 for two soft drinks and INR 314for two pints of beer. Dinner in the Cayman Islands is the most expensive at INR 8470 whileDubai is priciest for drinks with two beers costing INR 2142 and two soft drinks INR 627.
For families wanting to stock up the holiday rental with some groceries, the best value destination for a loaf of bread is Mauritius, where a family could buy ten loaves at INR 29 each for the price of one loaf in the most expensive destination, Turks and Caicos, where a loaf of bread costs INR 306. For a pint of milk, Goaand Gran Canariaoffer the best value at INR 30 while Barbados is the most expensiveat INR 155.

TripIndex Sun methodology TripIndex Sun looks at 29 popular winter sun destinations around the world which commonly see temperatures of at least 20C or higher between December and March.
The TripIndex Winter Sun study, by TripAdvisor, is based upon online and phone research conducted from 6th to 22nd October 2014 by Ipsos, a global research firm.
A total of 29 destinations were researched. The sample for car hire was sourced from internet searches. Groceries prices were sourced by from internet searches and telephone inquiries with staff members. The sample for dinner, beer and soft drinks was sourced from the TripAdvisor website and based on the most popular ranking according to TripAdvisor’s popularity index for each destination during the fieldwork period. Three to five establishments were sampled for each item in order to work out the average price. Prices were sourced for the winter holiday period 15 December – 31 March 2015, and were collected in the local currency of each destination. Exchange rates were taken from www.xe.com website and converted into INR on 22 October 2014. All holiday rental prices were provided by TripAdvisor.
Holiday rental: Prices specify the average cost of a week’s stay in a two-bedroom holiday rental as listed on TripAdvisor, in the listed destination between 15 December and 31 March 2015.
Car hire: Prices specify the average cost of one week’s family car hire including basic insurance cover from globally known car hire companies (where available) in each destination.
Evening meal for four: Prices specify the average cost of a traditional or common two-course meal (starter and main course) for four people (prices averaged from three mid-range restaurants in each destination).
Beer for two: Prices specify the cost of a pint of beer for two people (prices averaged from three mid-range restaurants in each destination).
Soft drink for two: Prices specify the cost of a bottle of cola for two people (prices averaged from three mid-range restaurants in each destination).
Groceries – Pint of milk and loaf of bread Grocery costs specify the cost of a standard loaf of sliced white bread (or the closest substitute) and a pint of full fat fresh cow’s milk (or the closest substitute). Prices averaged from three leading supermarkets in each destination.
