Bharat Electronics Limited Hands Over Schilka Upgrade to Army

Navratna defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) handed over the first Upgraded Schilka Weapon System to the Indian Army today. Lt Gen (Dr) V K Saxena, AVSM, VSM, Director General, Army Air Defence, received the system from Mr S K Sharma, Chairman & Managing Director, BEL, at a function organized at BEL's Bengaluru factory.

 

BEL had received the contract for upgrading Schilka Weapon Systems in March 2011 from the Indian Army after the successful evaluation of the prototype system. The Bulk Production Clearance has been obtained and the first upgraded system was handed over today.

 

Schilka Upgrade is an all weather, self-propelled, tracked, low-level Air Defence Weapon System. The upgrade carried out involves upgradation from Analog Radar system to state-of-the-art Search-cum-Track Digital Radar, with electro optical fire control system. Also, Main Engine, Auxiliary Engine, Integrated Fire Detection and Suppression System, NBC (Nuclear, Biological & Chemical) filter and Communication system have been upgraded. Air conditioner has been provided for the comfort of the crew.
