G D Goenka University Hosts First Edition of Inter - College Moot Court Competition for Law Students

- Over 132 students from 44 law colleges of the country gear up for the Competition to be held from 11th-13th March 2016.

- Hon’ble Mr. Justice A.P.Shah, Former Chief Justice, Madras and Delhi High Court & former Chairperson, Law Commission of India  to inaugurate the competition

 

With an objective to raise the standards of Clinical Legal Education in India, the GD Goenka University (GDGU), School of Law is hosting the first edition of GDGU Moot Court Competition scheduled from 11-13, March 2016 in the University premises. 132 law students from 44 colleges across 16 states of the country are participating in the 3-day competition which will be adjudged by prominent legal luminaries. Hon’ble Mr. Justice A.P.Shah, Former Chief Justice, Madras and Delhi High Court & former Chairperson, Law Commission of India will inaugurate the competition in the presence of Prof. Dr. Raj Singh, Vice-Chancellor, GD Goenka University (GDGU), Mr Lalit Bhasin, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court & President, Society of Indian Law Firms, Mr. S Prabhakaran, Co-Chairman, Bar Council of India and Prof. Dr. S Shantha Kumar, Dean, School of Law.

 

Moot Court Competitions, which are a mandatory part of law curriculum in all law schools today, offer a practical and application-based approach to learning of law. Participating institutions in the first edition of the GDGU Moot Court Competition dealing with the international law regime include leading colleges like National Law School Bangalore, National Law University Delhi, other National Law Universities from Raipur, Gujarat, Assam, Kerala, and others.

 

The competition is divided in four rounds in which the students presented their arguments on various cases before legal experts/judges from companies like AZB Partners BMR Legal, Deloitte, Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan, NGT & Supreme Court, SREI Infrastructure (Kolkata), Shardul Amarchand, Mangaldas, Khaitan & Co., Zeus Law and others.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Dr.Raj Singh, Vice Chancellor, GD Goenka University, said “We at GD Goenka University believe in imparting practical knowledge to our students which will prepare them for the real life situations. The first edition of the Moot Court Competition aims to provide students with a platform to develop and practice their trial advocacy skills before distinguished members of the law fraternity.”

 

Prof. Dr S. Shanthakumar, Dean, School of Law, GDGU said, “The GDGU School of Law is dedicated to promote the practical aspect of legal training for ensuring a wholesome legal education, and the GDGU Moot Court Competition is a maiden endeavour of the School of Law in this direction. We are looking forward to the competition which will enable students to test their skills and get first-hand experience and knowledge from veterans.”

 

The final round of the Competition and Valedictory Function will be presided over by former Judges of the Bombay, Karnataka and MP High Court, Mr Ajit Kumar Sinha, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court & Vice President, Supreme Court Bar Association and Mr. Abhinav Ashwin, Partner, AZB & Partners
