GEMS Education’s Academic Workshop Led by Dr. Sugata Mitra Delivers New Perspectives in Technology Education for India

In an endeavour to build a world-class teaching faculty, GEMS Education - the largest private operator of kindergarten-to-grade-12 schools in the world, today co-organised a workshop by internationally acclaimed educationist and Professor of Education Technology at Newcastle University - UK, Dr. Sugata Mitra in Mumbai. Dr. Sugata Mitra is also the recipient of the prestigious TED Prize 2013.

The theme of the workshop was: “Effective use of technology in teacher education and professional development.” Educationists and teachers from various parts of the country participated in the workshop to better understand how technology can be integrated into mainstream education, with the objective of yielding better results. This GEMS Education supported Dr.  Sugata Mitra workshop delivered interesting perspectives on a wide spectrum of subjects such as; the future of learning, on experiential and experimental learning, on pedagogy and assessment in academic learning, while also providing a renewed perspective on how both teachers and students could prepare themselves for the future.”

Addressing the large gathering present, Dr. Sugata Mitra said, “Technology can play a large role in evolving world class standards in any field. Amalgamation of technology with education can empower not only students but teachers too, and create unique models in imparting education and inspiring innovativeness. The Indian education system can benefit by “SOLE” – the Self-Organised Learning Environment, which can exist wherever there is a computer, an internet connection and students willing to learn.”

About Dr Sugata Mitra:

Dr. Sugata Mitra is a long-term educationist and a scientist of international repute. He has over 25 inventions and first-time applications in the areas of Cognitive Science, Information Science and Education Technology, to his credit. Dr. Mitra has been the Chief Scientist at NIIT and is currently Professor of Educational Technology at Newcastle University, UK. 

Dr. Mitra is a winner of "Man of Peace Award" from Together for Peace Foundation, USA, and "Social Innovation Award" from Institute of Social Inventions, UK. He was also conferred the "Dewang Mehta Award" by the Government of India in recognition for his work related to Hole-in-the-Wall.
