Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra 2014

20-day religious pilgrimage spanning 280 kilometers to begin from 18th August, 2014

The Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra 2014, a pilgrimage held every 12 years takes place from August 18 - September 6, 2014. Participating in the 280 km yatrathat spans 20 days helps lot of devotees from across the worldget a closer look at the culture, faith and geography of Uttarakhand. For registration, Biometric registration process has been initiated for the Yatris.

The Yatra originates from the Nauti village 20 km of Karnaprayag Tehsil of Chamoli district of Uttarakhand after the Kunwar of village Kansua inaugurates the ceremony. Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra is an arduous journey (it's a trek) and the three weeks of yatra are packed with the exposure of Garhwal Himalaya culture, ethnic lifestyle and endemic flora & fauna of the region. Majority of yatra route is along the Pindar valley. The journey absorbs the rainbow like beauty of traditions of the Himalayan society and a deep feeling of faith and reverence for Nanda Devi in Himalayan folk lore reflects the respect held for women in Uttarakhand.

Nanda Devi- the goddess, daughter of Kings of mountains - is the spiritual goddess for natives of Garhwal and Kumaon region.The legend is that Nanda Devi, consort of Lord Shiva left her village and went to the Nanda Devi Parbat. Therefore when the yatra starts, heavy rain occurs as if the devi is crying. This yatra covers many villages and in between the Devi meets her sister in the Bhagwati village.The Chausigya leads the main role in the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra.The sheep has four horns and the Yatra starts with this sheep from Nauti Village.The people decorate the sheep with clothing's and ornaments and when the yatra reaches its destination, the sheep is freed.

Yatra Route: Nauti – Idabadhani - Nauti - Kansuwa - Sem – Koti - Bhagwati – Kulsari – Chepnue – Nandkesari - Faldiagaon – Mundoli – Wan (Latu Devta) – Gairo Patal - Bedni – Pathar Nachonia – (Bhagubasa, Roopkund & Jeura Gali) – Shila Samudra - Homkund – Chandaniyaghat – Sutol – Ghat –Nauti.

How to get there: The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun in Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.The nearest railway stations are Rishikesh in Dehradun District, Haridwar, Dehradun and Kotdwar in Pauri district in Garhwal. If travelling fromKumaun, the nearest railway station is Kathgodam near Haldwani. The starting point is well-connected by bus fromDehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh. For more information please visit

Requirements: Yatris are advised to carry good hiking boots, winter clothes, torch, rain protection, water-proof tents and sleeping bags etc. The trek requiresyatris to be in good health.
