Service-oriented Data Centres are Rapidly Evolving in India

The 4th Data Centre India 2017 International Conference ended on a high note with delegates and participants being ecstatic about the future of this sunrise industry. Organized by Bharat Exhibitions, this event had the full support of Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) and COAI.

According to Gartner, the current Data Center market in India is valued at $2.2 billion, and is expected to touch $4.5 billion mark by 2018. Main drivers for this huge increase are growth in data and digital intelligent devices, digitalization and also the government’s Digital India campaign. With the increase in the demand, it is become even more important for the Data Centers to continue to evolve.

 

The theme of the conference was, "The DC of Tomorrow: Service-oriented, software-defined and data-centric” and it focussed on tracing the importance of various aspects of Next generation Data Centers and Virtual Cloud based Data Center. The first panel discussion was on the topic of “Maintaining Data Center Standards and its importance in the Digital Era Impact of Network Functions Virtualization."

 

The Guest of Honour, Smt. Neeta Verma, Director General, National Informatics Centre, Ministry of Electronics & IT kicked off the panel discussion on the high note by bringing to the forefront the potential Data Centers have for a market like India and how they are useful for the business. She asserted, “Data Centres are going to grow, Data Centers will have a lot of requirements but perhaps the operations of Data Centers will continue to evolve. So be ready for agility and be ready to transforming the business.” She concluded her remarks by saying that forums like these are very useful in times such as now as they give an expert view on what is happening in the sphere and also a preview of what is expected to come.

 

All the panel members agreed that in the times to come the need for Data Center will continue to sky rocket. Commenting on the same lines, Shri Manoj Tandon, General Manager (OSS/BSS/Data Centre), RailTel Corporation of India Ltd. said, “As the name suggests, Data Centers need to be at the center of business and processes. There is great shift happening in terms of thinking and there are some projects that are in the pipeline that are forcing us to back to the drawing board and revaluate.” He also mentioned that they are looking at expanding their spending on Data Centers in the coming months and hence it has become imperative for them to look at the cost efficiencies and agility."

 

Ms. Puneet Kaur Kohli, Group Executive Vice President IT & CTO, Bajaj Capital Limited drew the attention of the panel towards the issue of Data Privacy. Commenting on this issue, she said, “The customer data is of utmost importance for us. At Bajaj Capital if I have to take my 52 years of legacy data in cloud, it is not an easy task.” Stressing about the challenges, Ms. Kohli also talked about how it is a big challenge for financial companies that have large databases like theirs find it difficult to migrate it to the cloud and touched on the topic of data interactivity.

 

Addressing the concerns regarding privacy and security Dr. Satyamoorti Sivasubramanian, Global Chief of Security, India & South Asia, Bharti Airtel Limited, said, “Currently we adopt standard processes for our managing our Data Center securely”.

 

Mr. Vipul Anand, Chief Information Officer, Jindal Steel & Power Ltd., “It is a very meticulous decision that you have to take about moving to the cloud. There is no threat in going to the cloud provided you keep yourself protected.” He further added, “One has to be very hands when running Data Centres and also keep an eye on the new technologies and also bear in mind the cost factor among other things.”

 

Addressing the theme about service oriented Data Centers,’ Mr. Pawas Agrawal, General Manager & CISO, Aircel Limited, “Combining the traditional and cloud-based approach, one can have a new system, which is more service-oriented Data Centers and these have already started evolving”

 

The panel discussion was moderated by Mr. Harnath Babu, Chief Information Officer, KPMG India and all the members of the panel expressed that cyber security was an area of concern for them. This session was followed by a technical discussion – “Unlock Your Data Center’s Potential” and the discussion here revolved around increased consumption of video and media-rich content and dominance of cloud & mobile applications.
