Singapore River Festival 2016 to Host First Ever Tightrope Performance Across The Singapore River

Singapore River One, the place manager for the Singapore River precinct announces the return of the Singapore River Festival. This year, the Festival will commence from 4th to 5th November with the theme “River Connections”. Celebrating the culture, lifestyle and history of the Singapore River, the theme was chosen in celebration of how the river connects our past to the present and the Singapore River to the community.

For the first time ever, a tightrope will be extended across the Singapore River for the opening act, Crossings, an original production inspired and conceived by the story of the Singapore River itself. Jointly produced by French acrobatic theatre production, Underclouds Cie and local entertainment producer, Muse Inc., it will be Underclouds Cie’s maiden performance in Asia. Crossings blends tightrope acrobatics, dazzling choreography, music effects and multimedia projections, exploring the extraordinary theme of connections in all our ordinary lives.

 

Along the river, the Festival will host a variety of performances and activities across Clarke Quay, Boat Quayand Robertson Quay. Immerse in the spirit by partying to the tunes of the resident DJ at the Silent Disco, enjoying multi-sensory acrobatic acts at the Riverfront Carnival and witnessing the headline performance by Underclouds Cie at Clarke Quay. Visitors at Boat Quay can enjoy Circular Spectacular - a street festivalon Circular Road programmed by creative non-profit Hyphen, featuring live bands across different genres, roving acts by Australian performance artist Justin Shoulder, a Samba Batucada Band as well asa site-specific light art installation by digital artist FLEX. There’s something for all the family including puppet making and face-painting workshops, and kids cardboard and chalkboard playground. Robertson Quay turns into an open-air cinema and a mass workout area with the Quayside Cinema and Fitness Workshops by the River. Those looking for a relaxing evening can enjoy apopular local film, “7 Letters” while the energetic can work out at fitness workshops such as Kids Yoga, Barre Bootcamp and Pound Workshop.

 

The festival also sees the return of Singapore River (SR) Signatures, an award recognising some of the finest dishes along the River. This year, the 21 winning dishes were handpicked by four local celebrity chefs, Anthony Yeoh, Bjorn Shen, Cheryl Koh and Nixon Low. Restaurants serving up these delectable dishes will be dishing out promotions in celebration of the revelry happening along the River.

 

The Singapore River Festival is a free-for-all event with some ticketed workshops and activities.

About Headline Act

 

Crossings by UndercloudsCie

Singapore River Festival’s headline act, Crossings will be performed by French performance group, Underclouds Cie. The husband-and-wife tightrope artistes, Mathieu Hibon and Chloe Moura, will perform Crossings, inspired by the story of the Singapore River and how it has evolved from a bustling trade port to adynamic, vibrant lifestyle destination. To them, it is also their story – about how their paths crossed, how they connected, the challenges they faced and the life they are now building together on an unfaltering path. Using lights, sounds and effects, the production will be performed live over two nights; above the river channel between Clarke Quay and Clarke Quay Central, adjacent to Read Bridge.

 

Singapore River Festival 2016 headline act, Crossings, is a free-access performance staged on 4th to 5th November 2016. Show times are at 8.00 pm and 9.30 pm on both nights at Clarke Quay.

What: Silent Disco

Gaining popularity in Singapore, Singapore River Festival brings festival-goers the opportunity to try out Silent Disco-ing by “Silent Disco Asia.

Where: Clarke Quay Fountain Square

When: 8.30 pm to 12.30 pm on Friday and Saturday, 4th to 5th November 2016

Fee: Free. This is limited to 250 headsets for each session.

 

What: Riverfront Carnival

Be hypnotised by multi-sensory acrobatic acts by fire stunt duo from Australia that use elements of fire and music to create a breath-taking experience. Visitors can also enjoy a bubble performance which combines art and science; transforming soap into foam sculptures and other works of art. There are also circus-themed roving performances which include a hypnotic umbrella dance and a hula hoop performance.

When: 6pm to 10pm on Saturday, 5th November 2016.

Fee: Free.

 

Connecting People through Art and Play at Boat Quay

What: Circular Spectacular connected by Hyphen

Circular Spectacular, brings Circular Road to life with its line-up of talents and activities surrounding the arts, live music, roving performances, street arty acts and fringe activities for all ages to partake in. Some activities include The Barter Market, light installation by FLEX, as well as puppet making workshop and other children activities.

Some key artistes include Flame of the Forest (FOTF), Wobology, Masia One & Reggae Remedy, Bantus Capoeira Singapore, as well as performance artist, Justin Shoulder from Australia.

When: 3pm to 10pm on Saturday, 5th November 2016

Fee: Free*

 

Connecting People through Movement and Rhythm at Robertson Quay

What: Fitness Workshops by the River

Presented by Urban Remedy, Singapore River Festival offers festival-goersexciting fitness workshops at Robertson Quay. Join in the fun and get your pulses racing with Kids Yoga, Barre Bootcamp and Pound Workshop!

Where: Quayside, Robertson Quay

When: 4 pm to 7 pm on Saturday, 5th November 2016

Fee: Workshops are free. No equipment is required except for comfortable clothing and shoes. Please note that this is an outdoor event with no provision of shower facilities.

 

What: Quayside Cinema

Wind down and enjoy an evening showcase of Singapore’s acclaimed local film, “7 Letters”. Stretch your legs out, lean your head back in a cosy, spacious setting and enjoy a relaxing evening under the night sky.

Where: Quayside, Robertson Quay

When: 8.30 pm to 10.30 pm on Saturday, 5th November 2016

Fee: Free. Bring your own mat.
