Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI) Plans to Train Over 54,000 People by 2020

  • The skill training institute will benefit more than 13000 people in FY 18

  • In 2017, 11898 persons were trained under various  skill development programmes (women train in FY 16 was 75, whereas in FY 17, the number was 294, which was a 292% rise)

 

Tata Power, India’s largest integrated power company through its skill development endeavor, TPSDI (Tata Power Skill Development Institute) has been successfully enhancing employability and uplifted the economic conditions of people since its inception. With the continued commitment to equip youth with relevant employable skills and make India the skill capital of the world, TPSDI has drawn a plan to train over 54,000 people by 2020.

 

In FY 17, 11,898 personswere trained under various skill development programmes. 58 per cent of eligible people have received placements post the training and this year the target is to reach the mark of 75 per cent. The company also has a vision to train all technical workforce deployed in various Tata Power plants and certify them under TPSDI. Central Board of Irrigation & Power(CBIP) has recognised TPSDI as the best training institute for skill development in FY17. TPSDI is also Training Partner of Power Sector Skill Council (PSSC) under NSDC and from this year on wards TPSDI is geared up to offer PSSC Courses with their certification.

 

TPSDI has set up five training hubs in five locations in the country leveraging the facilities of Tata Power which includes Shahad – Mumbai, Maharashtra; Trombay – Mumbai, Maharashtra; Maithon – Dhanbad, Jharkhand, Mundra – Kutch, Gujarat and Jojobera – Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.

 

Speaking on this achievement, Mr. Anil Sardana, CEO & MD, Tata Power, said, “At TPSDI, we will make sure that we create the best training facilities and design and impart courses in the best possible manner. TPSDI's unique certification system will be a great value addition for both, the learners and the Industry. In the next 10 years, through this initiative, we will make a mark in the Indian system and will also take this international. By getting skilled, people will find great value for themselves and will also be able to contribute more productively at their workplace”.

 

The institute provides modular training courses that are purposefully designed to be market driven and employment oriented across a wide range of skills especially in the power and allied sectors, to address the skill gap challenge faced by Indian power sector. TPSDI also focuses on other dimensions of skill building, such as numerical ability, science, basic IT, industry orientation, communication, soft skills and personality development, work ethics, and places special emphasis on safety, health and environment considering the sector's specific need. The training consists of both knowledge and hands-on skills. The Institute consciously works towards providing greater access to its courses to the members of disadvantaged sections of the society as part of its Affirmative Action Policy and also reach out to those in the below-poverty-line (BPL) category. 

 

Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI) this year introduced Skills on Wheels, a mobile concept to make skill trainings more accessible to people. It is essentially a 16 x 8 x 8.6 ft. mobile container designed to seat 12 trainees at a time.  Through this 'Mobile' training and assessment center, TPSDI will provide Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), training and accreditation to Neighborhood Electricians, etc. It is considering expanding the offering to more such courses.
